Job Summary:

Maintains school health services to maximize the positive impact on the educational environment for students.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Evaluates the psychosocial and physical health and development status of students to make a nursing assessment and establish priorities for action.
  • Participates in district screening programs, referrals, and follow-up activities.
  • Collaborates with principals, teachers, and/or counselors to inform them of students with frequent or prolonged absences and/or current health problems.
  • Interprets medical findings to students, parents, and appropriate school personnel, making recommendations concerning the student's program.
  • Assists with early childhood and kindergarten enrollment screening programs.
  • Supports the district program for communicable disease controls as prescribed by the state Department of Health and the School District.
  • Maintains student immunization records.
  • Supervises the Health Room and coordinates the Health Room Assistants through a management approach.
  • Assists in developing policies for caring for students who become ill or injured at school.
  • Provides first aid and/or nursing care to students, staff, and visitors as needed, releasing them to the care of parents, designated responsible persons, or other medical/hospital personnel when further attention is required.
  • Notifies parents or designated responsible persons regarding the health status of students when appropriate.
  • Makes referrals and follows up on individual health concerns by telephone, written reports, or personal conferences with parents and/or medical personnel.
  • Administers medications in accordance with district policy.
  • Remains alert to the school environment for safety hazards and sanitary conditions.
  • Utilizes direct health services as a vehicle for health education and counseling.
  • Serves as a consultant and resource person for the total health education program.
  • Assists teachers in presenting health instruction.
  • Promotes wellness and self-care.
  • Promotes healthy maintenance for students and school personnel.
  • Serves as a screening team member in identifying, evaluating, and providing for exceptional children.
  • Recommends modifications in the educational program for students based on their health and/or development status.
  • Assists in developing Individual Educational Programs when necessary.
  • Coordinates planning for the physical needs of handicapped students.
  • Is accountable for nursing assessment and care provided.
  • Documents all nursing assessment and care.
  • Evaluates nursing assessment, health screenings, and care provided in accordance with state and district guidelines.
  • Provides input into district health programs and evaluations.
  • Is responsible for annual CPR certification.
  • Maintains confidentiality.
  • Performs other related and appropriate duties as assigned by the building principal or the Director of Health and Wellness Services.
