Role Summary

The Thermal Software team at Rivian is responsible for developing cutting-edge algorithms to manage the thermal performance of our powertrain, battery packs, heat pump, and cabin HVAC systems. As a member of this team, you'll collaborate with designers, engineers, and other stakeholders to design and develop sophisticated thermal systems.

Responsibilities
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure that thermal systems are designed with the right requirements, interfaces, and interactions to achieve optimal vehicle performance.
  • Break down high-level feature requests into sub-system and component-level requirements, and drive the implementation, testing, and release of thermal management systems.
  • Develop estimation and physics-based thermal models to deliver exceptional customer experiences in terms of performance, range, NVH, and cabin comfort.
  • Develop control-oriented system models and use them to develop and refine control strategies for thermal management systems.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and firmware engineers to define control system capabilities and establish actuation/sensing requirements.
  • Work with Thermal Management Module SW and integration engineers to implement, test, and debug algorithms.
  • Develop strategies to identify outliers based on fleet analysis and apply them in a manufacturing environment.
Qualifications
  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related STEM discipline.
  • 10+ years of relevant industry experience working with thermal control systems and software.
  • 2-5+ years of software engineering experience is required.
  • Strong fundamentals of heat-transfer and thermodynamics, including devices like heat exchangers, compressors, valves, pumps, fans, and heaters.
  • Strong proficiency in developing controls and creating controls-oriented dynamic system models of thermal, hydraulic, or mechanical systems in Matlab/Simulink/Python.
  • Familiarity with state-of-the-art system modeling techniques for electric motors, inverters, batteries, and thermal management.
  • Excellent proficiency with analysis of large data sets in Matlab/Python.
  • Demonstrated strong strategic thinking and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate cross-functionally, work hands-on, and execute on open-ended projects in a fast-paced, resource-constrained environment.
Pay Disclosure

Salary Range for California-Based Applicants: $218,200 - $272,800 per year (actual compensation will be determined based on experience, location, and other factors permitted by law).

Rivian provides robust medical/Rx, dental, and vision insurance packages for full-time employees, their spouse or domestic partner, and children up to age 26. Coverage is effective on the first day of employment, and Rivian covers most of the premiums.
