Job SummaryThe Thermal Software Team at Rivian is responsible for developing cutting-edge algorithms to manage the thermal performance of our powertrain, battery packs, heat pump, and cabin HVAC systems. As a key member of this team, you will collaborate with designers, engineers, and other stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of thermal management systems.
Responsibilities- Work closely with design and development engineers to ensure that thermal subsystems are designed with the necessary requirements, interfaces, and interactions to achieve optimal vehicle performance.
- Break down high-level feature requests into sub-system and component level requirements, and drive the implementation, testing, and release of thermal management systems.
- Research and develop estimation and physics-based thermal models for thermal management of the cabin HVAC, heat pump, battery, and powertrain to deliver exceptional customer experience.
- Develop control-oriented system models and use them to develop and refine control strategies for thermal management systems.
- Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and firmware engineers to define control system capability and establish actuation/sensing requirements.
- Work with Thermal Management Module SW and integration engineers to implement, test, and debug algorithms.
- Develop strategies to identify outliers based on fleet analysis and apply them in a manufacturing environment.
- M.S. or Ph.D. in Engineering, Computer Science, or related STEM disciplines.
- 10+ years of relevant industry experience working with thermal control systems and software.
- 2-5+ years of software engineering experience is required.
- Strong fundamentals of heat-transfer and thermodynamics, devices like heat exchangers, compressors, valves, pumps, fans, and heaters along with their subsystem and system-level interactions.
- Strong proficiency in developing controls creating controls-oriented dynamic system models of thermal, hydraulic, or mechanical systems in Matlab/Simulink/Python etc.
- Familiarity with state-of-the-art system modeling techniques for electric motors, inverters, batteries (latest Li-Ion chemistry), and thermal management.
- Excellent proficiency with analysis of large data sets in Matlab/Python.
- Demonstrated strong strategic thinking and communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate cross-functionally, work hands-on, and execute on open-ended projects in a fast-paced, resource-constrained environment.
- Demonstrated leadership skills, people management, and organizing leading the work of others.
