Position Overview

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a dedicated and skilled Paralegal to enhance its Consumer Protection Section. Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide comprehensive litigation and investigative support to attorneys within the Charitable Solicitations and Deceptive Conduct Unit, as well as the broader Consumer Protection Section.
  • Oversee the management of documents and evidence sourced from various stakeholders, ensuring meticulous organization through Bates-stamping, indexing, reviewing, coding, scanning, copying, and filing.
  • Assist in the preparation of responses to discovery requests and conduct thorough telephone interviews with consumers and witnesses, documenting findings in memoranda and drafting affidavits as necessary.
  • Support the preparation for hearings and trials, including the organization of exhibits, witness subpoenas, and trial notebooks.
  • Conduct searches of public, governmental, and proprietary records to locate witnesses and gather pertinent information regarding investigative targets or defendants.
  • Manage investigation and litigation files, ensuring accurate entry of information into the case management system, tracking litigation deadlines, and maintaining an organized pleadings index.
  • Facilitate the distribution of restitution to consumers, which includes mailing letters and checks, locating missing consumers, and reviewing compliance reports.
  • Monitor and summarize multistate working group conference calls.

Minimum Qualifications:

To be considered for this position, candidates must possess a solid understanding of legal terminology, court procedures, case management systems, and document management systems. Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential, along with effective time management abilities. Candidates should demonstrate the capacity to work independently and collaboratively, managing large volumes of information efficiently in a fast-paced environment. A minimum of 5 to 10 years of litigation paralegal experience is preferred. A bachelor’s degree or a paralegal certificate is required, although an equivalent combination of training and experience may be accepted. Proficiency in personal computer usage, particularly with Microsoft Word, Excel, databases, and legal research tools, is necessary.
