Seasonal Position - Highway Maintenance Technician
Department of Public Works - Right of Way Maintenance Team
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Starting Pay: $15.09 per hour
POSITION SUMMARY
This role involves active participation in the upkeep and repair of county roadways.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Engages in various labor-intensive tasks aimed at the maintenance and repair of county roads.
- Fills potholes with asphalt and ensures the surface is smooth and level.
- Clears vegetation from rights-of-way.
- Picks up litter and debris along roadways.
- Directs traffic at work zones.
- Utilizes a range of equipment, tools, and vehicles; responsible for cleaning and maintaining these items.
- Operates different hand and power tools effectively.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Completes other tasks as assigned by management.
- In emergency situations, all employees are deemed essential and may be required to undertake alternative duties.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED
- Understanding of road construction and maintenance practices.

SUPERVISION
The Crew Supervisor provides work assignments based on general instructions and checks completed tasks for adherence to procedures and accuracy.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include county policies and procedures, which are generally clear but may require interpretation.
WORK COMPLEXITY AND SCOPE
- The work involves related maintenance tasks, with challenges posed by adverse weather and heavy traffic.
- The primary objective of this position is to assist in the maintenance and repair of county roads, contributing to their safety and upkeep.

- Interactions typically occur with coworkers and the public.
- Contacts are generally for problem resolution and service provision.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Work is usually performed while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light and occasionally heavy objects, and uses tools requiring a high degree of dexterity.
- Work is conducted outdoors, sometimes in inclement weather. Employees may encounter noise, dirt, grease, and machinery with moving parts, necessitating the use of protective equipment such as masks, goggles, and gloves.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
No supervisory responsibilities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Ability to read, write, and perform basic mathematical calculations.
- Experience sufficient to understand the basic principles relevant to the primary duties of the position, typically acquired through an apprenticeship or similar role for one to two years.
- Possession of a valid driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
