Position Summary

The Lead Counselor is responsible for coordinating and providing counseling and treatment (related to the employee's scope of practice) to clients with substance use disorders. Demonstrates commitment to the provision of services for the underserved and sensitive working with a variety of people from low-income populations, with diverse educational, lifestyle, ethnic, and cultural origins; disabled, homeless, substance users, HIV (AIDS) infected, and/or physiologically impaired.

Required Qualifications
  • High School diploma required, Associate or Bachelor's degree in related field preferred OR an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
  • Valid CCAPP, CADTP, or CAADE certification is required.
  • 2 years experience counseling people with substance abuse challenges using evidence-based practices, knowledge of the local treatment community, and referrals preferred.
  • If in recovery, at least two years of sobriety is preferred.
  • The ability to work independently and as a team, strong organizational skills, and the ability to stay on task are required.
  • Excellent customer service experience including active listening, problem-solving, and the ability to remain calm in emotional or stressful situations.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
  • Computer (PC) literate in general office functions such as word processing, email, and database software.
  • Commitment to HIPAA and ability to abide by standards of professional ethics and maintain confidentiality.
  • A current CPR and first aid certificate or willingness to be trained is required within the first (90) ninety days of employment.
  • Adherence to infection control procedures, including but not limited to, standard precautions of temperature monitoring, hand washing, symptom self-monitoring, masking, and social distancing.
  • Assist and support the Center/Department/Program to meet standards of High Reliability.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and insurable driving record.
Essential Responsibilities
  • Provide counseling and treatment services to patients with substance use challenges and the ability to train other SUD counselors.
  • Manage an assigned caseload of patients: maintain accurate records of intake, assessments, treatment plans, progress notes, care coordination, billing, and discharge.
  • Maintain confidentiality, ethics, and professionalism in all aspects of the job.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

The work environment is characteristic of an office environment. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; use hands and arms to reach. The employee is also required to stand; walk; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must also possess hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the phone. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.

The employee may be in contact with individuals and families in crisis who may be ill, using substances and/or not attentive to personal health and safety for themselves or their homes. The employee may experience a number of unpleasant sensory demands associated with the client's use of alcohol and drugs, and the lack of personal care. The employee may also be exposed to bodily fluids (blood, urine) and hazardous chemicals.
