Job Overview

Culinary Services Program Supervisor

Housing Matters collaborates with individuals and families to forge pathways out of homelessness into stable housing. As a frontrunner in the mission to eradicate homelessness, we seek passionate individuals committed to our vision that homelessness in Santa Cruz County should be infrequent, brief, and non-recurring.

Under the guidance of the Chief Facilities Operating Officer, the Culinary Services Program Supervisor is accountable for the comprehensive operation of an industrial kitchen that provides daily meals for Housing Matters participants. The ideal candidate will possess the ability to lead and work alongside a small team, including volunteers, while being actively engaged in daily operations and adhering to safe food handling protocols.

Work Schedule and Benefits
  • Full-time, exempt position with eligibility for medical, dental, vision, 403b, and a generous PTO plan.
  • Regularly scheduled shifts.
Compensation

Kitchen Manager Pay Band (Annual):

$67,891 - $86,648

Kitchen Manager Starting Wage (DOE):

$67,891 - $74,850

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Food Service Management, Human Nutrition, or a related field is preferred.
  • Experience working with vulnerable populations.
  • Proven ability to manage small teams.
Special Requirements
  • A minimum of 3-5 years of experience in non-profit institutional cooking (e.g., school cafeteria, residential facility, shelter) preparing meals for large groups is preferred.
  • Experience in administrative tasks and record-keeping, including food cost analysis.
  • Must possess Serve-Safe Manager certification or be able to obtain it within 6 months of hire; recertification will be provided as necessary.
  • Spanish language proficiency is a plus.
  • A valid California Class-C Driver's License is required.
Essential Knowledge
  • Proficient in Google Suite.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Familiarity with Child and Adult Food Program (CACFP) grant requirements or similar regulatory standards.
  • Knowledge of standard and universal precautions for infection control.
  • Competence in operating kitchen equipment.
  • Understanding of kitchen cleaning and safety protocols.
  • Strong organizational skills within a kitchen environment.
  • Expertise in food handling practices.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee kitchen operations and propose enhancements for systems and processes, implementing approved changes.
  • Analyze food costs, waste, and employee hours; recommend innovative strategies to optimize grant spending and enhance the dining experience for participants.
  • Document food nutrition information for compliance with grant reporting requirements.
  • Maintain records of cleaning schedules for the kitchen.
  • Manage kitchen schedules and monitor employee time cards for compliance.
  • Provide exemplary customer service to participants and volunteers, fostering a respectful and dignified environment.
  • Ensure adherence to food safety and sanitation standards, documenting compliance.
  • Act as a leader for kitchen staff and volunteers, offering support as needed.
  • Complete food orders and maintain accurate documentation for billing purposes.
  • Track and manage food donations.
  • Supervise menu planning to ensure nutritional standards are met.
  • Oversee food preparation and assist as necessary.
  • Employ quick problem-solving skills as challenges arise.
  • Clearly communicate standards and cooking methods to staff, providing direction to volunteers and participants.
  • Foster a professional and cordial atmosphere among staff and volunteers, recognizing the importance of maintaining a positive kitchen culture.
  • Ensure compliance with cleanliness and sanitation practices among kitchen personnel and volunteers.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with other Housing Matters managers.
  • Attend relevant meetings with associated departments.
  • Participate in staff meetings and supervisor check-ins.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
