Music Education Facilitator

MISSION
The Allentown Symphony Association's El Sistema Lehigh Valley program provides underserved youth with a complimentary opportunity to cultivate essential life skills through engaging in high-quality daily music education, large ensemble participation, and academic support within a secure and nurturing atmosphere. Participants will enhance their discipline, develop the capability to set and accomplish long-term objectives, and foster a sense of social responsibility within a community that values creativity, imagination, and music. This initiative aims to empower the Lehigh Valley community as young artists, their families, and community members unite to celebrate the accomplishments of these youths.
El Sistema Lehigh Valley (ESLV) is a project of the Allentown Symphony Association (ASA), in collaboration with the Allentown School District, to ensure access to exceptional instrumental and orchestral education that promotes youth development. Central to ESLV is ASA's strategy to establish youth orchestras in underserved communities throughout the Lehigh Valley, in partnership with local organizations.

Current Openings:
Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass: The Music Education Facilitator will conduct string orchestra rehearsals, group lessons, and/or sectionals, and will collaborate in teaching ensembles with up to 100 children.
Choir/General Music: The Music Education Facilitator will lead choir rehearsals and general music classes with four ensembles categorized by age and ability.

Essential Functions:
As a member of the ESLV faculty, responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
Attend music pedagogy and professional development sessions, required concerts, meetings, and events.
Prepare and communicate with teachers, program managers, ASA staff, and parents.
Assist with classroom management logistics, classroom setup and breakdown, instrument tracking, supplies tracking, etc.
Serve as a consistent and compassionate mentor to ESLV students.
Assist with the implementation of systems, standards, and evaluations related to student progress.
Perform administrative duties essential to managing one's own classroom, including photocopying, room setup/breakdown, lesson planning, etc.
Supervise students during transitions and breaks.
Maintain professional, prompt lines of communication with ESLV and ASA staff.

Qualifications:
A passion for working with youth and a desire to serve as a role model to students.
Demonstrated excellent musicianship and artistry as a teacher/performer.
A four-year undergraduate degree or equivalent experience required; a post-graduate degree or equivalent experience is a plus.
A strong commitment to El Sistema's philosophy of social change through music and the missions of ESLV.
A solid understanding of standard music pedagogy (Suzuki, etc.) and repertoire.
Experience teaching strings/choral classes and conducting ensembles is preferred.
Experience working with children from diverse ethnic and economic backgrounds; experience in underserved communities is advantageous.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
Interest and ability to be a motivational mentor and role model for students, parents, and peers as an artist, teacher, and citizen.
Must have independent means of transportation.
Must be able to work collaboratively as a team member and operate under frequent observation.
Ability to arrange music is a plus.
Bilingual in English and Spanish is a plus.
