Job Title: Animal Facility Assistant

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Animal Facility Assistant to join our research team at Johns Hopkins University. As an important member of our team, you will be responsible for providing exceptional animal care and technical assistance in support of our research initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform routine animal care tasks, including cleaning and sanitizing animal cages, feeders, and water bottles.
  • Assist in providing humane care for a wide variety of laboratory animal species, including rodents, rabbits, birds, and frogs.
  • Conduct work in accordance with policies and procedures, including the USDA Animal Welfare Act and the ILAR Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals.
  • Maintain accurate records of animal care and welfare, including animal census and environmental factors.
  • Perform euthanasia and other procedures as instructed.
  • Assist in maintaining colonies of genetically altered rodents and perform data collection.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
  • High school degree or graduation equivalent.
  • Ability to achieve Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification within 15 months of employment.
  • Knowledge of basic animal husbandry and research techniques.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to interact and work with faculty, students, staff, and visitors in a knowledgeable and respectful manner.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • One year of laboratory animal care or related experience.
Working Conditions:

This is a non-exempt position that requires working in a fast-paced environment with a high level of attention to detail. The successful candidate will be able to work independently and as part of a team, and will be able to lift, carry, or otherwise move and position objects and materials weighing up to 50 lbs.
