Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Animal Attendant III to join our team at the Animal Resources Center at The University of Texas at Austin. As an Animal Attendant III, you will play a critical role in supporting ongoing biomedical research on campus by providing husbandry and animal care to research animals.

Responsibilities
  • Provide husbandry and animal care to all species housed at the ARC, including USDA-covered large animals, other USDA-covered species, rodents, and aquatics.
  • Perform all aspects of animal husbandry, including feeding, watering, cage cleaning, and monitoring health and behavior.
  • Maintain accurate records of animal care and husbandry activities, including health observations, environmental conditions, and husbandry exceptions.
  • Operate cage washing equipment, including rack washers, tunnel washers, and autoclaves, and sanitize animal housing equipment using cage washing machines.
  • Fill drinking bottles with fresh water and cages with bedding, and perform routine maintenance on equipment as required.
  • Accept deliveries of equipment and supplies from vendors, process and store supplies in assigned storage areas, and verify delivered supplies against delivery documentation.
  • Prepare and use dips, sprays, detergents, and disinfectants, and maintain and sanitize animal rooms, equipment, and facilities to prevent infections and disease.
  • Perform routine checks on the automatic watering system, prepare or mix feed according to specific instructions, and set up incoming animal deliveries.
  • May work without onsite supervision on weekends and holidays to provide care for all species, including USDA-covered species, and may operate University vehicles as required.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED and at least three years of animal husbandry experience.
  • Possess a valid Texas driver's license.
  • Ability to pass a work steps test - standard physical abilities test.
  • Experience following basic work instructions.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in care and handling of laboratory animals.
  • Experience in careful food preparation for animals.
  • Experience with equipment used in working with laboratory animals.
  • Experience in sanitation of housing and facilities to prevent infections and disease.
  • Demonstrate punctuality, good attendance record, careful follow-through as instructed, and flexibility.
  • AALAS Certification.
Working Conditions
  • Usual research or laboratory animal facility.
  • Use of protective clothing is required and furnished.
  • Contact with a variety of animals that may bite or scratch.
  • Possible exposure to animal bites, diseases, allergens, and bio-hazards.
  • May work around chemical fumes, biohazards, or chemicals.
  • Occasional evening, weekend, and holiday work.
Salary and Benefits

The salary for this position is $46,000, and the University of Texas at Austin offers a competitive benefits package, including 100% employer-paid basic medical coverage, retirement contributions, paid vacation and sick time, and paid holidays.
