Job Title: Deputy City Manager

Join the City of Goodyear, AZ as a Deputy City Manager and play a key role in shaping the city's future. As a senior administrative leader, you will be responsible for overseeing assigned departments and contributing to the achievement of the city's objectives.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Supervise and coordinate the efforts of department directors to achieve departmental objectives and city-wide goals.
  • Work with the City Manager and department directors to plan, organize, and implement programs affecting assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Organize and coordinate efforts with other city departments, agencies, and private organizations to accomplish program goals and resolve complex issues.
  • Facilitate the preparation of the city's strategic plan and master plans, including long- and short-term objectives and functional tactics.
  • Serve on various city teams and regional agencies, attending team activities and representing the city.
  • Manage administrative and operational matters, including budget review, travel and training approval, personnel actions, and resource planning.
  • Meet with citizens, professionals, and business groups to address questions and secure assistance with carrying out programs.
  • Attend City Council meetings and report on activities requested by the City Manager.
  • Negotiate contracts and agreements with outside entities to further the city's goals and objectives.
  • Brief the City Manager on matters of concern in assigned departments and functions.
  • Take on special projects requiring executive-level decision making and coordination.
Requirements:
  • Formal education in a general professional or technical field, typically acquired through a Bachelor's degree or equivalent.
  • Minimum nine years of experience in a related field, preferably as a department director or higher-level position.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Ability to read technical information, policies, laws, guidelines, and procedures at a college level.
  • Ability to perform intermediate math calculations, including basic calculations and moderately complex financial analysis.
  • Ability to write reports, ordinances, policies, and general plan goals, objectives, and policies.
  • Complex managerial skills, including managing and monitoring work performance, evaluating program objectives, and establishing broad organizational goals.
  • Significant budget responsibility, including final approval of budgetary recommendations and monitoring progress toward fiscal objectives.
  • Significant policy and decision-making authority, including independently deciding how objectives are achieved and what resources are needed.
  • Comprehensive technical skills, including advanced knowledge in approaches and systems affecting program design and implementation.
  • High interpersonal and human relations skills, including overseeing and approving final decisions, interacting with others outside the organization, and exercising participative management skills.
