Position Overview

This role is situated within the U.S. Department of the Interior, specifically in the Facilities Management Division, focusing on the upkeep and enhancement of natural landscapes.

Job Summary

This is a term position expected to last for an initial period of 13 months, with the possibility of extension up to four years. Please note that term positions do not grant permanent status within the Federal service.

Key Responsibilities

  • Clear trails of obstructions such as fallen trees, branches, rocks, and other debris; perform maintenance on drainage systems including culverts and ditches; manage brush clearing.
  • Engage in tread work on various surfaces including native soil, gravel, and asphalt trails. Assist or lead teams in projects related to bridge construction, tread maintenance, drainage management, and trail clearing.
  • Construct or repair essential structures such as bridges, food storage boxes, ramps, corrals, outbuildings, and restroom facilities. Participate in masonry tasks as needed.
  • Service and maintain equipment including chainsaws, brushing saws, gas rock drills, breakers, and generators.
  • Repair camping gear, hand tools, lanterns, stoves; sharpen cutting tools such as axes, pulaskis, shovels, and clippers.

Employment Conditions

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Appointment is contingent upon a background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Compliance with the Selective Service Registration Act is required for male applicants.
  • Participation in the Direct Deposit Electronic Funds Transfer Program is mandatory.
  • Flexibility to work on-call, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime, is necessary.
  • This position may involve a variable work schedule, shifting between part-time, full-time, and on-call based on workload demands.
  • New employees or supervisors in the Federal government must complete a one-year probationary period.
  • A one-year trial period is also required.
  • Overnight travel away from home may be necessary, up to 16 nights per month, and a government charge card for travel purposes will be issued.
  • Training and maintenance of a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority may be required.

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement. To qualify for this position, candidates must demonstrate sufficient knowledge and capability in the following areas:

  • Ability to perform the duties of the position with minimal supervision (SCREEN OUT).
  • Technical practices relevant to the role.
  • Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, and repair.
  • Proficiency in using and maintaining tools and equipment.
  • Understanding of materials relevant to maintenance tasks.

Volunteer Experience: Experience includes both paid and unpaid work, including volunteer activities through National Service programs and other organizations. Such experience contributes to building critical competencies and skills that are directly applicable to paid employment.

Education

For Wage Grade (WG) positions, there is no substitution of education for experience.
