The role of the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) encompasses the provision of nursing care tailored to the unique requirements of patients, adhering to the guidelines established by the Illinois Nurse Practice Act. Additionally, this position involves overseeing the daily operations of the clinic.
Reporting Structure
This position reports directly to the Operations Manager.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive nursing interviews to gather health histories, assess patient knowledge, and document findings accurately.
- Collect vital medical information, including chief complaints and diagnostic results, to facilitate physician evaluations.
- Act as an advocate for patients, ensuring their rights are protected and addressing any service-related concerns.
- Facilitate referrals to external agencies to ensure continuity of care.
- Assess patient issues through direct interaction or phone consultations, providing appropriate advice or referrals.
- Deliver home care instructions regarding medical procedures and medications.
- Provide preoperative and postoperative guidance for various surgical and medical interventions.
- Document all patient education activities in the medical records.
- Administer respiratory therapies and maintain documentation in accordance with established policies.
- Perform irrigation procedures, such as catheter placements and enemas, while documenting outcomes.
- Collect and code specimens, including cultures, for laboratory analysis.
- Assist with the application and removal of casts, providing necessary patient instructions and documentation.
- Carry out procedures such as catheterizations and dressing changes, following infection control protocols.
- Administer medications via all routes except for IV blood products, IV push medications, and chemotherapy.
- Support physicians during patient examinations by preparing instruments and materials in line with infection control standards.
- Orient new staff members to the nursing specialty.
- Offer emotional support and guidance to patients and their families.
- Participate in emergency response teams as needed.
- May serve as a Health Care Assistant in accordance with clinic policies.
- Exhibit professionalism by adhering to established performance standards, including dress code.
- Ensure confidentiality for both patients and staff members.
- Maintain professional knowledge through continuous education, including attending relevant programs and reviewing current literature.
- Handle pre-certifications and referrals for insurance purposes as required.
- Coordinate scheduling for procedures and surgeries as necessary.
- Follow the clinic's incident reporting protocols diligently.
- Comply with all OSHA regulations and training requirements.
- Deliver exceptional customer service while adhering to the clinic's Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Completion of an accredited LPN (LVN) program.
- Eligibility to perform IV therapy upon successful completion of an approved training course.
Licensure and Certification
- Possession of a current LPN license in the state of Illinois.
- CPR certification in accordance with American Heart Association guidelines is required within 30 days of hire.
Skills and Competencies

Work Environment
- Work is conducted in an office setting during clinic hours.
