Promotes children's readiness through various social/emotional, cognitive, physical, and language experiences. Ensures a safe and healthy educational setting while enhancing family engagement and community connections. The Head Start program follows a public school calendar, while the childcare service operates year-round.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Understand and adhere to the philosophies and regulations of SMOC Child Care and Head Start, including EEC, Head Start, NAEYC, and QRIS standards relevant to the classroom.
- Facilitate classroom operations by creating and maintaining an effective learning atmosphere that nurtures each child's growth.
- Ensure compliance within the classroom and foster a positive team environment.
- Engage in professional development opportunities to enhance staff skills.
- Maintain open communication with teachers and supervisors, promptly sharing relevant information.
- Observe and document children's behaviors to assess their skills and tailor learning experiences to meet individual and group needs. Identify concerns and facilitate appropriate interventions or referrals.
- Evaluate classroom requirements for resources and communicate needs to the lead teacher or supervisor.
- Keep the classroom space, equipment, and materials organized, safe, and clean.
- Provide accurate documentation and record-keeping as required for the classroom.
- Adhere strictly to health and safety protocols.
- Participate in all mandatory meetings, training sessions, and parent engagement activities.
- Complete Mandated Reporter (51A) training as required.
- Foster positive relationships with families through regular communication, including phone calls, conferences, and home visits.
- Supervise children actively at all times.
- Address client needs effectively, both within and outside the scope of responsibilities.
- Participate in engagement team meetings and communicate effectively with families and staff across departments.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding client, employee, and agency information in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
- Ensure adherence to program, agency, and funder requirements, as well as SMOC policies and procedures.
- Adapt to the evolving needs of children and families while striving to provide high-quality services.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
- Possession of an EEC PS Teacher certificate is required.
- Strong communication skills are essential.
- A degree in Early Childhood Education or a related field is preferred.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse populations and communicate with children, families, and colleagues.
- Bi-lingual abilities are advantageous.
- Preference is given to individuals who are past or current parents of children in the Head Start program and meet qualification criteria.
REPORTING STRUCTURE
- This position reports directly to the Center Director.
- Indirect reporting to the Division Director.
- Supervises Teacher Aides.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Must be capable of performing physical tasks associated with the role, including lifting children and responding swiftly in emergencies.
- A recent physical examination confirming good health and compliance with EEC standards is required.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
This role involves direct or incidental interaction with clients served by SMOC across various programs funded or managed by the Executive Office of Health and Human Services. A successful background check is a prerequisite.
