POSITION SUMMARY:

The Outpatient Registered Nurse (RN) CAP 1 serves as an introductory role within the Clinical Advancement Program (CAP). This position is responsible for delivering and coordinating high-quality clinical care, which includes assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation for a designated group of patients. The RN may delegate suitable tasks to direct patient care personnel, including but not limited to RNs, LVN/LPNs, and Patient Care Technicians. As a vital member of the End Stage Kidney Disease (ESKD) healthcare team, this role engages in decision-making, educational initiatives, leadership responsibilities, and quality enhancement activities aimed at improving patient care outcomes and operational efficiency.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

All responsibilities are to be executed in alignment with Fresenius Kidney Care policies, nursing standards, and applicable state and federal regulations.

  • Executes essential functions under the supervision of the Team Leader, with guidance from Clinical Educators, Preceptors, or in collaboration with fellow Registered Nurses.
  • Conducts systematic and ongoing collection and analysis of patient data before, during, and after hemodialysis treatment for assigned patients, documenting findings in the patient medical record, adjusting treatment plans as necessary, and notifying the appropriate personnel as needed.
  • Evaluates and documents the educational needs of patients and their families to provide both initial and ongoing education.
  • Collaborates with direct and ancillary patient care staff to ensure the safe and effective delivery of hemodialysis therapy to assigned patients.
  • Administers prescribed medications and documents the medical justification and effectiveness.
  • Initiates or assists in emergency response protocols.
  • Acts as a resource for the healthcare team and participates in the training and orientation of new staff as assigned.
  • Ensures proper laboratory collection, processing, and shipping procedures are followed and reschedules any missed or insufficient laboratory collections.
  • Identifies expected outcomes and updates nursing assessments and care plans in collaboration with the Interdisciplinary Team.
  • Ensures patient understanding of transplant and treatment modality options.
  • Required to fulfill CAP requirements for advancement.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned by the Supervisor.

  • This position involves direct patient care, which may require heavy lifting, patient mobility assistance, and support with ambulation. Equipment aids and/or coworkers may assist as needed.
  • Frequent prolonged periods of standing are required, and the employee must be able to bend over.
  • The employee may occasionally need to move, with assistance, machines and equipment weighing up to 200 lbs., and may lift chemical and water solutions weighing up to 30 lbs. as high as 5 feet.
  • The work environment is typical of a healthcare facility, featuring controlled air temperature and moderate noise levels.
  • Exposure to infectious and contagious diseases/materials may occur.
  • Daily tasks include desk work, computer usage, and interaction with patients and healthcare staff.
  • The position may require travel to training sites or other facilities.
  • Employees must complete the Ishihara's Color Blindness test as a condition of employment. Note that failing this test does not automatically disqualify employment; reasonable accommodations will be considered.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Oversight of Patient Care Technicians/LPNs/LVNs/RNs may be assigned as a Team Leader or designated Nurse in Charge, contingent upon meeting the following criteria:

  • Successful completion of all Fresenius Kidney Care education and training requirements for new employees.
  • A minimum of 9 months of experience as a Registered Nurse.
  • A minimum of 3 months of experience in chronic/acute hemodialysis as a Registered Nurse.

EDUCATION AND LICENSURE:

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Current appropriate state licensure.
  • Current or successful completion of CPR BLS Certification.
  • Must meet the practice requirements in the state of employment.

EXPERIENCE AND REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • Entry-level position for RNs with less than 1 year of Nephrology Nursing experience in the last two years.
  • Preferred minimum of 9 months experience as a Registered Nurse.
  • Preferred experience in chronic/acute hemodialysis.
