We are seeking a highly skilled Radiation Therapist to join our team at Herbert J. Thomas Memorial Hospital Association dba Thomas Hospitals. As a Radiation Therapist, you will play a critical role in the cancer management team, working closely with radiation oncologists, medical dosimetrists, and medical physicists to deliver accurate and effective radiation treatment plans.
Key Responsibilities- Administer external radiation therapy to patients as prescribed by a radiation oncologist to affect curative or palliative treatment of disease.
- Assure that the patient's position, the orientation of the treatment equipment and the placement of the treatment beam conform to the specifications of the planned course of treatment, as monitored by daily and weekly chart reviews, and accuracy through the use of image guidance.
- Perform simulations and localization (where available) according to established protocols and produce usable images for the planning and verifying of treatment procedures. Calculate actual monitor units in cases of emergent simulations after normal department hours.
- Prepare and construct equipment, such as immobilization devices, treatment devices, and protection devices.
- Assist the radiation oncologists, medical dosimetrists, and medical physicists in preparing the physical and technical aspects of radiation treatment plans by providing information about the patient's condition and anatomy.
- Educate, prepare and reassure patients and their families by answering questions, providing physical assistance, and reinforcing the radiation oncologists' advice regarding treatment reactions and post-treatment care.
- Plan and perform procedures for the treatment and imaging of patients, meeting the quality standards of the department as identified through professional literature and department policy.
- Perform daily equipment warm-up and quality checks as outlined by medical physics. Document QA as required. Report any variances to medical physics.
- Determine technical charges based on procedure(s) performed and assign appropriate CPT code.
- Cooperate with others, share ideas and contribute time to achieve organizational and departmental goals.
- Attend and participate in departmental meetings and activities to support process improvement and team building.
- Demonstrate appropriate level of knowledge and technical aspects of the position, maintaining professional and technical competencies as required by the organization and/or the accreditation and licensing bodies.
- Initiate and develop relationships with others (co-workers and physicians) in order to function as an effective team member both internally and externally to the department.
- Train and mentor students in the WVU Radiation Therapy Technology Program. Provide feedback and assessments as required.
- Schedule patients for simulation and treatment procedures, often coordinating with other department schedules and patient appointments.
- Graduate of a formal radiation therapy technology program accredited by the Joint Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT).
- Licensed by the WV Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy Technology Board of Examiners.
- Board Certified by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in Radiation Therapy Technology.
- Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date.
- West Virginia state criminal background check required, and Federal, if applicable, for DHHR BMS regulated area.
