Under the guidance of the Wildlife Habitat Supervisor II, the selected candidate will assume the role of a Fish and Wildlife Technician (Permanent – Intermittent). This position involves a variety of responsibilities focused on the management and upkeep of wildlife areas and public hunting programs. The incumbent will be engaged in daily operations at designated wildlife areas and may extend support to other regions as needed. A commitment to working weekends, holidays, and irregular hours is essential. A valid Driver's License is required for vehicle operation.
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) seeks motivated individuals who are passionate about preserving California's natural ecosystems and possess a professional demeanor. The role entails active participation in habitat maintenance and infrastructure repairs on Department-managed lands. Responsibilities also include overseeing seasonal staff, volunteers, and assisting with inmate labor. The technician will operate various machinery, including tractors, backhoes, and all-terrain vehicles, to fulfill operational tasks in alignment with departmental policies and management plans.
The incumbent will take a leadership role in the Waterfowl hunting program, which includes setting up and dismantling hunting facilities, managing public hunter processing, addressing inquiries, and training seasonal staff and volunteers in operational procedures and safety protocols.
Working Environment
The work setting is primarily within wildlife areas, with potential assignments in various counties during hunting seasons. The technician will encounter uneven terrain and varying weather conditions, necessitating adaptability and resilience. Work hours may fluctuate, including long shifts and weekends.
Special Qualifications
- Must hold a valid California Driver's License.
- Education equivalent to completion of high school.
- Capability to lift up to 40 lbs.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends.
