Senior Laboratory Scientist for Neonatal Screening

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Laboratory Scientist to join our team at the Texas Department of Aging & Disability Services. This role will be responsible for performing complex tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry analysis on high-volume neonatal screening specimens.
About the Role
As a Senior Laboratory Scientist, you will serve as an authority on test procedures in the laboratory, utilizing your considerable working knowledge of all procedures to maintain analytic accuracy and precision. You will be responsible for monitoring and independently performing specimen preparation, analysis, quality control, and assay acceptability, data and work list evaluation, result entry, release of final results, maintenance, and troubleshooting of equipment, proper record keeping, and training of personnel.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Performs highly complex MS/MS and LC-MS/MS analysis on neonatal screening specimens adhering to standard operating protocols.
2. Evaluates and interprets highly complex data, identifying problems with atypical test results and consulting with Team Lead or Group Manager to ensure final result capture and reporting.
3. Performs routine and specialized preventive maintenance of highly complex equipment, identifying equipment problems, performing troubleshooting, and making routine adjustments as indicated.
4. Performs sampling of filter paper specimens, standards, and controls for newborn screening tests, determining specimen acceptability, and completing proper record keeping and documentation involved with specimen and standards preparation.
Requirements
To be successful in this role, you will need:
1. Advanced knowledge and skill in laboratory, clinical chemistry, quality control, quality assurance, MS/MS, and LC-MS/MS principles, techniques, and terminology.
2. Knowledge of laboratory safety, including sample-handling techniques.
3. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, follow written and verbal instructions, interact effectively with staff, and work in harmony with other team members.
4. Ability to prioritize and organize detailed tasks to maintain required section timeframes, recognize and solve work area problems, and use, maintain, and troubleshoot work area instruments and automated testing equipment.
Estimated Salary
The estimated annual salary for this role is $65,000 - 80,000, depending on experience and qualifications. The department offers a competitive benefits package.
