Position Overview:
The Ophthalmic Surgical Nurse plays a crucial role in delivering expert nursing care through proficient evaluation and assessment methods tailored to meet the unique needs of each patient. This position emphasizes the significance of patient education and provides targeted nursing interventions.

Reporting Structure:

This role reports directly to the Director of Nursing.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Demonstrates proficiency in circulating during ophthalmic surgical procedures, including but not limited to cataract and glaucoma surgeries, with a commitment to learning additional techniques such as retinal and corneal procedures.
  • Collaborates effectively as a team member to support the comprehensive perioperative process.
  • Efficiently organizes time, equipment, supplies, and personnel to ensure optimal case management.
  • Supervises and directs patient care within a designated operating room.
  • Delegates tasks appropriately based on the skills of available staff members.
  • Practices cost-effective strategies by utilizing supplies judiciously and ensuring efficient turnover times.
  • Assists in maintaining inventory levels of supplies, medications, and equipment.
  • Addresses patient needs upon admission to the surgical environment.
  • Ensures accurate identification of patients and the correct surgical procedures in accordance with established protocols, communicating this information to all surgical team members.
  • Reviews patient medical records and collaborates with healthcare team members to plan appropriate care.
  • Provides comfort and reassurance to patients, maintaining their privacy and dignity throughout the process.
  • Explains the intraoperative phase of standard procedures to patients, ensuring they are informed and comfortable.
  • Fulfills the role of circulating nurse, adhering to approved operating room protocols to meet the requirements of scheduled surgeries.
  • Prepares the operating room in accordance with the specific needs of the patient and the procedure being performed.
  • Assembles and ensures the proper functioning of all necessary equipment, supplies, and instruments prior to the start of the procedure.
  • Anticipates the needs of the surgical team and assists anesthesia personnel during the administration of anesthesia.
  • Supports the safe positioning of patients and prepares the operative site as directed by established guidelines.
  • Monitors adherence to aseptic techniques and accepted standards throughout the surgical process.
  • Participates in the identification and confirmation of the operative site, engaging in the 'time out' procedure.
  • Ensures continuity of patient care by effectively communicating with other perioperative staff and accurately documenting records.
  • Responds promptly to the needs of both patients and physicians.
  • Accurately interprets and executes verbal orders and directions.
  • Maintains thorough documentation of patient care records in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Possesses knowledge of Privacy Practices and the Patient Bill of Rights.
  • Identifies and addresses educational, psychosocial, and cultural needs of patients.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge regarding medications, including anesthesia and herbal therapies, along with their associated risks.
  • Adheres to infection control and environmental safety protocols.
  • Exhibits a positive and compassionate demeanor towards patients, colleagues, and all individuals encountered in the workplace.
  • Seeks guidance and support when necessary, adhering to organizational policies and procedures.
  • Ensures confidentiality of all patient health information.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the use and maintenance of patient care equipment.
  • Familiar with supply locations and emergency procedures.

Qualifications/Certifications:
Graduate of an Accredited Registered Nurse Program
BLS Certification Required
Current unrestricted State Registered Nurse License
Detail-oriented and well-organized

Work Environment:
This position is situated within an Ambulatory Surgery Center.

Physical Requirements:
This role necessitates extensive mobility, including walking and standing. Daily tasks involve pushing, pulling, and lifting patients or equipment, with potential exposure to communicable diseases and bloodborne pathogens.
