Long Beach, California, United States Relativity Full time

Company Overview:

At Relativity Space, we are driven by two ambitious objectives: to establish a premier commercial launch enterprise with Terran R and to emerge as a frontrunner in additive manufacturing advancements in the United States. Both of these initiatives are integral to our long-term vision of developing humanity's industrial foundation on Mars, facilitating the expansion of interplanetary life and enhancing the human experience. This journey commences right here on Earth, where we design, construct, and launch rockets to transport customer payloads into orbit. Our medium-to-heavy lift reusable rocket, Terran R, addresses the increasing demand for launch capabilities through an iterative approach that accelerates design, testing, and development while reducing costs. Our pioneering research and development in 3D printing is redefining the limits of large-scale additive manufacturing.

Your experience with us transcends a mere job; it is a chance to influence the future of aerospace technology, additive manufacturing, and the human experience, alongside a community of dedicated and innovative individuals. Embark on this remarkable journey with us as we collaborate to turn our vision into reality.

About the Team:

The Structures Manufacturing team at Relativity Space is currently engaged in manufacturing strategies and process development for Terran R, our next-generation fully reusable rocket. This team encompasses a diverse range of responsibilities—from optimizing factory floor layouts to developing and executing intricate tooling and processes, while consistently collaborating with the vehicle engineering team to significantly impact the rocket's design for efficient manufacturing. This team plays a vital role in the development and initial production of Terran R, integrating efforts from design, additive, vehicle, and manufacturing teams to deliver flight-ready vehicles for testing and launch. To achieve our objectives, we will guide the product from design concept through construction to structural acceptance testing, ensuring rapid progress while maintaining high quality and well-defined products.

About the Role:

The Structures Manufacturing team is tasked with collaborating closely with the vehicle design team to develop the primary structures of Terran R, while also spearheading mechanical assembly efforts. To achieve our goals, we will establish top-tier manufacturing, testing, and quality control processes that enable our team to operate efficiently while still delivering high-quality, well-defined products. This team is essential to the development and initial production of Terran R.

Success in this role requires a self-motivated individual who thrives in uncertain environments, identifies challenges swiftly, and provides clarity to previously ambiguous situations. A strong commitment to quality and the discipline to achieve it are essential. You will set the standards for how manufacturing Bill of Materials (mBOMs) are structured and how work orders are formulated, as well as how issues on the production floor are addressed and how testing operations are conducted on the vehicle. As a pioneer for the company, you must be self-driven and capable of influencing both Engineering and Production to effectively execute your strategies. Comfort with both administrative tasks, such as drafting work instructions and analyzing test data, as well as hands-on activities like setting up workstations, assembling components, and conducting testing operations is crucial. You should also be adept at operating and troubleshooting complex systems that include mechanical components, electronic hardware, and software.

  • Oversee a significant primary structure assembly and its associated subassemblies from design release through Acceptance Test Procedures (ATP)—design the build flow to ensure an efficient, high-quality product flow that can scale over time.
  • Represent the manufacturing division in focused cross-functional teams to evaluate concepts for their feasibility from a Structures Manufacturing perspective.
  • Generate the build mBOMs, Concept of Operations (CONOPS), build schedule, and maintain these throughout the development process.
  • Create work instructions, specifications, and best practices across multiple high-fidelity processes, aiding in the standardization of processes across the manufacturing team.
  • Establish workstations within the inaugural work cell by considering assembly operations, tooling and capital equipment requirements, and production rate targets.
  • Support the production floor through real-time issue resolution and provide feedback as we innovate the next generation of manufacturing technology.
  • Provide Design for Manufacturing insights to structures teams during the development phase and through the initial prototype and flight builds.
  • Contribute to the growth and development of the manufacturing team by participating in interview panels and mentoring opportunities for interns and less experienced team members.
  • Foster strong collaborative relationships with both Engineering and Factory Development teams to ensure that all company objectives are met.

About You:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in aerospace, mechanical, manufacturing, or a related engineering discipline.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in hardware production within a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with design for manufacturing and the construction of initial articles.
  • Experience collaborating with design engineering, manufacturing, and production personnel.
  • Experience drafting work instructions for constructing structural assemblies and sub-assemblies.
  • Experience in tooling development as a manufacturing representative, particularly for welding and trim/drill operations.
  • Experience working with structures, critical lifts, weldments, machining, and assemblies.
  • Experience in leading, executing, and managing projects in a dynamic environment.
  • Experience overseeing tooling development as a manufacturing representative, particularly for integration access and serviceability.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing execution systems and quality management systems.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience transitioning products from prototype to mass production.
  • Successful new product introduction of an aerospace hardware system into a manufacturing, testing, and production system.
  • Experience developing user interfaces for manufacturing and testing execution.
  • Experience planning and conducting tests for hazardous operations.
