Job Summary

As a Pharmacy Technician at Brown University Health, you will play a vital role in supporting our pharmacists in the formulation, preparation, and dispensing of medications and pharmaceutical supplies. You will work under the supervision of a pharmacist and direction of a technician group leader or technician specialist to perform a variety of technical and support tasks.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Assist in the formulation and preparation of medications by reviewing practitioner medication orders and preparing medications for review and dispensing by a pharmacist.
  2. Perform general operations of electronic drug dispensing system (EDDS) used in the inventory control and distribution of pharmaceuticals and related supplies.
  3. Maintain operating room medication inventory, including controlled substances.
  4. Prepare intravenous admixtures, including chemotherapy, critical care infusions, and pediatric infusions, utilizing aseptic techniques in a controlled environment.
  5. Work in United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) 797 clean room environment and in accordance with procedures of the same.
  6. Perform controlled substance discrepancy resolution in conjunction with other licensed health care professionals.
  7. Participate in controlled substances inventory management in the Pharmacy and the hospital.
  8. Deliver medications to clinic procedural treatment operating room and patient care areas.
  9. Retrieve medication orders.
  10. Repackage and label medications for distribution in accordance with pharmacist-approved Packaging and Labeling Records.
  11. Prepare various emergency medication kits for pharmacist review and distribution to patient care areas.
  12. Perform routine procurement and inventory management of medications, including ordering and receipt of chemotherapy and other pharmaceutical supplies.
  13. Complete necessary paperwork for controlled substance procurement and verify receipt of such.
  14. Process medication requisitions for departments and laboratories for pharmacist verification.
  15. Reconcile patient and department medication charges.
  16. Perform routine preventive maintenance to all equipment according to standards for same.
  17. Assist in maintaining related Pharmacy records and files, performing equipment calibration and maintenance.
  18. Assist in maintaining the Pharmacy and medication supply areas in a neat and orderly fashion, ensuring medications are stored under proper conditions for light, temperature, sanitation, and segregation.
  19. Participate in quality assessment and improvement activities and medication safety initiatives of the Pharmacy and the hospital.
  20. Utilize approved process for reporting actual, prevented, and near-miss medication errors.
  21. Answer the telephone and triage as appropriate.
  22. Interact with internal and external customers in accordance with hospital Customer Service Standards.
  23. Assist in orientation and training of other pharmacy technicians and interns.
  24. Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements

High school graduate or equivalent. Completion of one to two years of college preferred. Maintains current unrestricted Rhode Island Pharmacy Technician licensure. Holds and maintains current National Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT) or has a minimum of one-year licensed pharmacy technician work experience, sits for National Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT) exam within first 6 months of hire, and achieves and maintains National Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT) within 12 months of hire. Possesses basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

Possesses physical ability to lift, carry, and maneuver medication delivery equipment and pharmaceutical-related inventories, including extended periods of work time spent standing and walking. Requires the visual and manual dexterity to operate a computer. New hires into this position must successfully pass a drug screen in conformance with Rhode Island State Law.

Independent Action

Performs independently within department policies and practices. Refers specific complex problems to supervisor where clarification of departmental policies and procedures may be required.
