11-Month School Transportation Operator

WEST COUNTY TRANSPORTATION AGENCY IS SEEKING A SCHOOL TRANSPORTATION OPERATOR. Certified drivers who are successfully hired will receive a $500 sign-on bonus with their initial payroll and an additional $500 upon completing six months of employment with the Agency.

Overview:
Under general supervision, the role involves operating a school transportation vehicle along designated routes to safely transport students, assisting in the upkeep and servicing of the vehicles, and performing related duties as necessary.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Operate a school transportation vehicle daily or as assigned, adhering to established routes and schedules while ensuring compliance with all relevant laws and regulations.
  • Safely escort students across streets when necessary, managing traffic as required to ensure student safety.
  • Transport students and staff on special trips to various locations, selecting optimal routes and adhering to scheduled departure and arrival times.
  • Conduct pre-operation inspections of the vehicle as mandated by law to ensure safety.
  • Maintain order among students during transit and at bus stops, addressing any disciplinary issues in accordance with Agency policy.
  • Follow all Agency protocols regarding student management and communication with parents and the community.
  • Provide first aid and emergency assistance as needed.
  • Keep accurate records of daily routes and vehicle operations.
  • Clean and service the assigned vehicle in accordance with Agency guidelines.
  • Participate in required training and in-service instruction.
  • Stand-by drivers may also perform minor clerical or custodial tasks when not engaged in driving duties.

Licensing Requirements:
  • Possession of a valid California Operator's License issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles.
  • Medical certification as required.
  • California Special Driver Certificate valid for operating a School Bus.
  • First aid certification from Red Cross or an equivalent organization, if required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Knowledge:
  • Safe driving practices and techniques.
  • All applicable provisions of the California Motor Vehicle Code and Education Code.
  • Relevant regulations regarding the safe transportation of school children.

Skills:
  • Ability to operate a school transportation vehicle safely and efficiently.
  • Capability to service, fuel, and clean the vehicle.
  • Ability to maintain discipline among students during transit.
  • Comprehension and execution of oral and written instructions.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with colleagues and the public.
  • Proficient in reading and speaking English at a level necessary for job performance.
