Position Summary & Responsibilities:
The Corrections Officer I is responsible for supervising and maintaining order among residents at all times. This role involves conducting searches of residents, individuals, and areas to prevent and control contraband. Officers will observe and monitor resident activities and interactions while enforcing established policies, rules, and regulations. Adherence to security protocols is essential in managing visitor, staff, resident, and vehicle traffic to prevent unauthorized access and the introduction of contraband. Officers will also conduct periodic counts of residents and respond to emergency situations following established contingency plans. This position may require regular rotation of posts and/or shifts within the facility. Officers must qualify with weapons under the guidelines set by the Kansas Department of Corrections (KDOC) during initial training and annually thereafter.

Qualifications:
Education: High School Diploma or GED
Licensing & Certification: Valid Driver's License
Minimum Qualifications: Candidates must be at least 18 years of age at the time of appointment, possess a high school diploma or equivalent, hold a valid driver's license, and be free of felony convictions, including any felony or misdemeanor domestic violence offenses as outlined in 18 U.S.C. § 922 (d) (9) and (g) (9).
Performance Standards: Corrections Officer I candidates will be evaluated on their ability to observe and recall resident behavior, surroundings, and events; write clear and comprehensive reports; respond swiftly to emergencies; navigate stairs; and apply physical force when necessary to manage violent or resisting residents. The role requires maintaining alertness over extended periods, remaining composed in stressful situations, and fostering effective working relationships with residents and colleagues. The incumbent must be capable of performing essential/event-driven physical functions. A probationary period of 12 months is mandatory for new Corrections Officers.
Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements: Candidates must successfully pass a pre-employment drug screening and physical examination.
