Compensation: $31/hour (Based on Experience)

Employment Type: Temporary (Approximately 4-month contract)

Overview

This full-time, non-exempt role involves conducting research on algal cultivation both in-house and under various service agreements. The selected candidate will report directly to the Director of Research & Development and will be tasked with the cultivation of algae at both laboratory and minipond scales. Responsibilities include collecting and analyzing growth and quality data, processing samples for internal and external analysis, and identifying and analyzing eukaryotic pests and weeds present in cultures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage inventory of research materials, ensuring timely procurement in collaboration with the Director of Research & Development.
  • Maintain laboratory stock cultures of algae and associated microbial communities.
  • Conduct algae cultivation at intermediate scales, including media preparation and vessel maintenance.
  • Regularly sample cultures and perform necessary analyses to monitor growth and quality.
  • Prepare and dispatch samples for external laboratory research as required.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Research & Development to form teams for project execution.
  • Identify and isolate eukaryotic pests, utilizing both microscopic and DNA-based methods for analysis.
  • Maintain detailed laboratory notes and share findings with the Director and project team members.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and stakeholders regarding project progress.
  • Prepare reports for internal and external stakeholders, assisting in presentations and meetings as needed.
  • Work collaboratively with other personnel within the R&D Department.

Additional Duties

  • Adhere to GMP and safety protocols, contributing to a safe laboratory environment.
  • Complete tasks as directed by the supervisor, ensuring appropriate budget allocations for projects.
  • Perform other assigned duties as necessary.

Physical Requirements

This role requires standing and working at a lab bench, as well as sitting at a computer. Candidates must be able to navigate uneven surfaces and climb ladders, with occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment

Work is conducted in a laboratory setting, with some outdoor tasks in a warm climate. Handling of chemicals is involved, necessitating appropriate personal protective equipment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Microbiology, Biology, Chemistry, Agriculture, Marine Science, or a related field.
  • Minimum of two years of laboratory experience, preferably in algal production or aquaculture, with knowledge of molecular biology techniques.
  • Ability to work efficiently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and strong mathematical skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Capacity to manage multiple tasks and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Able to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
