Job Overview
Position Summary:
The George Washington University Department of Campus Recreation is dedicated to fostering a vibrant community among students, alumni, and the broader campus environment through the promotion of healthy lifestyles and competitive spirit. Situated in the heart of the nation's capital, our esteemed institution aims to establish a premier recreation program that reflects its overall commitment to excellence. We strive to create an exceptional experience for students, while also engaging the wider community in nurturing future leaders.
The Division for Student Affairs is focused on creating an inclusive environment that encourages connection, personal growth, and well-being for every student throughout their journey at GW. Our integrated approach emphasizes a cohesive student experience grounded in collaboration, compassion, and a student-centered philosophy. Within this framework, Lerner Health and Wellness delivers effective programming tailored to the diverse needs of our university community, encompassing intramural sports, fitness instruction, and informal recreational activities.
Reporting directly to the Associate Director of Programs, the Manager of Club Sports and Intramural Programs will oversee the administration of Club and Intramural Sports initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage the Club Sports program, providing guidance and support to all student-led Club Sport organizations.
- Procure necessary equipment for the program, conducting monthly inspections and performing minor repairs as needed.
- Travel weekly to supervise Club Sport practices and competitions throughout the academic year.
- Coordinate scheduling for all practices and games in collaboration with relevant campus partners.
- Work closely with the Student Organizations Finance team to manage purchases, travel arrangements, driver's license registrations, and club sports budgeting, tracking activities through the Engage platform.
- Act as the primary on-site manager for evening and weekend leagues and events related to the Intramural and Club Sports programs.
- Supervise a team of student and temporary staff responsible for the operation of the Intramural Sports program, serving approximately 3,500 participants.
- Oversee the hiring, training, and evaluation of staff, including conducting comprehensive training clinics for officials and organizing training programs for intramural sports student managers and key staff.
- Manage payroll and operational budgets for intramural and club sports activities.
- Schedule facilities to accommodate intramural events throughout the year, collaborating with facilities and scheduling personnel.
- Evaluate programming effectiveness and participant satisfaction annually, aligning with industry trends.
- Develop and implement training programs and guidelines for student staff development in the areas of Intramural and Club Sports.
- Serve as the facility manager on duty as needed for openings, closings, and weekend operations.
- Perform additional duties as assigned, with the understanding that the omission of specific tasks does not preclude the supervisor from assigning related responsibilities.
Minimum Qualifications:
Ideal candidates will possess a high school diploma or GED, accompanied by four years of relevant professional experience, or a Bachelor's degree in a related field. The degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience may be considered.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Recreation Management, Sport Management, Physical Education, or a related discipline.
- Professional experience in a university recreational sports environment.
- Experience managing multiple recreation and fitness programs within a university setting.
- Relevant experience in administering recreation facilities, equipment, activities, and policies.
- Familiarity with risk management practices, including prevention and post-event processes.
- Experience in emergency response planning and operational contingency planning.
- Skills in organizational planning and project management.
- Knowledge of the rules and regulations governing athletic games such as softball, basketball, volleyball, flag football, and soccer.
Compensation:

Benefits:
GW offers a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurance, time off and leave, retirement savings, tuition assistance, wellness programs, and various voluntary benefits.
Work Schedule:
This is a full-time position requiring 40 hours per week, with a schedule of Monday through Friday, including expected evenings and weekends.
