Position Overview
In this role, you will be tasked with the critical function of underwriting property facultative reinsurance programs within the United States. As a Facultative Underwriter, your expertise will be essential in conducting thorough risk evaluations, assessing coverage options, pricing strategies, and engaging with designated brokers and clients. This position may involve leading negotiations to cultivate and sustain a profitable facultative reinsurance portfolio.
Key Responsibilities:
- Independently underwrite and price certificate and program business in alignment with corporate and departmental guidelines.
- Evaluate new and renewal business, performing comprehensive risk and coverage analysis, and provide informed recommendations for proposed terms within your underwriting authority.
- Scrutinize primary policy, reinsurance contracts, and endorsement language to ensure precision and adherence to established guidelines.
- Refer any business that exceeds your underwriting authority to the appropriate referral underwriter.
- Analyze necessary risk information and propose reinsurance solutions to brokers and clients.
- Maintain meticulous and accurate business records.
- Offer insights into quantitative and qualitative analyses of results for the Strategic Business Unit (SBU).
- Facilitate effective internal communication and coordination between the SBU, Regional Division, and other relevant groups.
- Collaborate closely with the Claims department.
- Support management in fulfilling various managerial responsibilities as needed.
- Client Relationship Management: Foster and sustain client relationships while identifying new business opportunities.
- Deliver prompt and effective service on all broker and direct client inquiries.
- Monitor the profitability of assigned clients.
- Promote the Group's capabilities and expertise externally.
- Reviews: Engage in peer reviews of team members' accounts.
- Participate in underwriting reviews of program clients or potential clients, occasionally in collaboration with the Reinsurance Division.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in (re)insurance underwriting, the broker community, or corporate risk markets.
- Preferred 5+ years of underwriting experience.
- Bachelor's Degree is preferred; an advanced degree is a plus.
- CPCU and ARe designations are preferred.
- Proficient in utilizing pricing models, tools, and other risk evaluation methodologies.
- Strong interpersonal skills, excellent negotiation abilities, and proficient oral and written communication skills, along with a solid understanding of accounting, finance, and actuarial principles.
- Ability to manage client relationships effectively and maintain profitability.
- Experience working with Brokers, Direct Clients, or Managing General Agents is essential.
- Willingness to travel for branch office visits, annual client audits, client and broker meetings, and industry conferences (approximately 30% of the time).
