Maintenance Technician

The Maintenance Craftsman is responsible for assisting maintenance technicians in installing, maintaining, and repairing the Watertown's School and Town buildings, including offices, classrooms, furnishings, and equipment. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in maintenance work, including carpentry, painting, plumbing, HVAC, and electrical. They will be able to work independently and as part of a team to complete projects and work orders efficiently.
Key Responsibilities- Assist maintenance technicians in installing, maintaining, and repairing buildings, equipment, and furniture.
- Perform unskilled repairs and assist craftsman in repairing district property, systems, and components.
- Mount, hang, and repair system component parts, playground, classroom, and office equipment, and facility components.
- Aid all trades (electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and carpentry) with work orders, including carrying/moving large objects, equipment, furniture, and assisting with all safety requirements.
- Paint walls, ceilings, trim throughout the town, primarily in offices and classrooms.
- Move equipment and materials within and between school and town buildings.
- Deliver mail and packages to various buildings throughout the school district and town as needed.
- Manage the key management program for school and town buildings.
- Make name plates and signs as needed.
- Coordinate with administration and other trades for the purpose of completing projects/work orders efficiently.
- Assist with snow removal around school and town buildings (e.g., walkways, entrances, stairs, and parking areas as needed).
- Request equipment, supplies, and materials for the purpose of maintaining availability of required items and completing jobs efficiently. Estimate labor or material costs/amounts as needed.
- Maintain accurate inventory of all equipment and needed resources.
- Able to handle hand tools, small power tools, and supplies to perform unskilled labor.
- Express ideas clearly and concisely orally and in writing in the English language.
- Comply with local, state, or federal guidelines, laws, and regulations, including safety guidelines.
- Comply with state codes, fire codes, and OSHA.
- Use and care for hand tools and equipment necessary to perform various non-skilled repairs tasks.
- Perform emergency work; respond to emergencies.
- Coordinate with custodian staff and other trades for the purpose of completing projects and work orders efficiently.
- Perform additional job-related maintenance duties as assigned by the Director of Public Buildings.
- High school or vocational school diploma. Advanced technical training preferred.
- Three years of experience in maintenance work involving repair and maintenance of buildings, office equipment, and furniture.
- Basic knowledge of all trades, including carpentry, painting, plumbing, HVAC, and electrical.
- Basic computer skills (e.g., typing, email, word, Excel, and work order inputs).
- Experience/knowledge of occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions.
- Valid Massachusetts Driver's License with no serious violations.
- Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing, using proper grammar and vocabulary.
- Criminal Justice/Fingerprint Clearance.
The Maintenance Craftsman will work in a variety of settings, including school and town buildings, and will be required to respond to emergencies and work in adverse weather conditions. The employee will interact with other staff members and will be required to work independently and as part of a team to complete projects and work orders efficiently.
The employee will be required to use standard office equipment, carpentry equipment, hand and power tools, trucks, and light equipment. The employee must be able to drive to various buildings within the district throughout the day.
Errors in decisions could result in injury to others, delay or loss of service, damage to buildings or equipment, monetary loss, and legal repercussions.
