ROLE OBJECTIVE: Ensures the safe and effective administration of medications for all patients within the healthcare facility by accurately interpreting physician directives, dispensing pharmaceuticals with precision, and overseeing therapeutic regimens. Provides timely and relevant drug information to fellow healthcare professionals. Maintains and evaluates patient medication profiles, offering recommendations to prescribers to guarantee the suitability of treatment, mitigate drug interactions, and prevent adverse effects. Manages appropriate stock levels of approved medications for routine, emergency, and general use.
QualificationsESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND: A Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy or a Doctor of Pharmacy degree is mandatory. Ongoing education to uphold licensure is essential.
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES: Must possess a valid license from the New Mexico Board of Pharmacy. Continuous education to maintain licensure and any relevant certifications is required.
SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:
- Strong verbal and written communication abilities
- Proficient mathematical skills are necessary
- Familiarity with keyboarding is advantageous (capable of using hospital pharmacy software)
- Word processing skills are beneficial
- Ability to collaborate effectively with medical personnel, nursing staff, and other healthcare team members.
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE: A minimum of one year of experience as a licensed pharmacist is preferred.
SUPERVISORY STRUCTURE:
- Reports to: Director of Pharmacy
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Exposure Risk: Bloodborne pathogen B (Occasional exposure during daily responsibilities. Minimal expected risk, but potential for unexpected contact with infectious materials. Exposure may be limited and superficial.) Working in close quarters in a dynamic environment. Possible contact with patients presenting infectious diseases. Potential exposure to hazardous substances and allergenic medications. Extended periods of use of video display terminals.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Capability to maintain a rapid work pace throughout the entire shift, even under demanding workloads and stressful conditions. Adequate hearing to utilize telecommunication devices and sufficient vision to interpret physician orders, requisitions, and reports. Hand-eye coordination adequate for aseptic procedures.
