Job Title: Middle School Advocate

Student U is seeking a dedicated and passionate Middle School Advocate to join our team. As a Middle School Advocate, you will work closely with a cohort of 15-20 middle school students, supporting their academic growth and social-emotional wellness.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead and oversee the study room for the assigned cohort of students.
  • Meet with students regularly to create and maintain individualized growth/study plans.
  • Serve as a liaison between Student U, Durham Public School teachers, students, and families.
  • Coordinate the use of tutors and non-academic supports.
  • Create a culture rooted in love and high expectations.
  • Facilitate whole-group community building spaces with students.
  • Build positive and supportive relationships with students.

  • Are persistent in communicating with stakeholders, and follow up when initial contact is a struggle.
  • Are comfortable and excited to take on the challenge of supporting online student learning.

  • Have strong instructional, classroom management, and organizational skills.
  • Are committed to helping our students grow both academically and socially/emotionally to reach their full potential.
  • Are committed to learning, growing and reflecting to reach their own full potential.
  • Are able to meet deadlines.
  • Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills with an ability to flex communication style.
  • Have experience and an ability to engage with diverse audiences, specifically racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse communities.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ability to speak Spanish.
