Banner Desert Medical Center/Cardon Children's Medical Center Main Surgery Department features 24 Operating Rooms, including specialized trauma and pediatric rooms, as well as minimally invasive and robotic surgery facilities.
Our institution provides a comprehensive array of surgical specialties, including Pediatric and Adult Cardiovascular, Trauma, Urology, Orthopedics, General Surgery, Gynecology, Neurology, and more. We are recognized as the busiest operating room in the region, handling high-acuity cases efficiently.

Located on an expansive campus in Mesa, Arizona, Banner Desert Medical Center is one of the largest and most comprehensive hospitals in the state, recognized for excellence in various medical fields.

POSITION SUMMARY
This role involves the selection and arrangement of surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment during surgical procedures. The Surgical Technologist is responsible for scrubbing in and providing instruments, sutures, and other sterile supplies throughout the surgical process. Additionally, this position may involve training and orienting new surgical technology staff and students as assigned. Proficiency in scrubbing for at least two surgical specialties is required.
The Cardiovascular Operating Room Surgical Technologist plays a crucial role in assisting the physician with advanced tasks during surgical procedures, including the use of cardiopulmonary bypass machines, cardiac assistive devices, and vascular interventions. The ability to perform under pressure in a fast-paced environment is essential.
CORE FUNCTIONS
- Prepares for surgical procedures by selecting appropriate instruments and supplies, ensuring they are in good working order. Reviews case carts for accuracy and troubleshoots any equipment issues.
- Anticipates the needs of the surgeon, passing instruments and retracting tissue as necessary. Maintains proficiency in scrubbing for at least two surgical specialties.
- Demonstrates aseptic technique and universal precautions throughout procedures, managing the disposal of sharps and waste properly.
- Ensures accuracy in surgeon preference cards and assists with operating room turnover between cases.
- Participates in the training and orientation of new surgical technology staff and students as required.
- May assist with administrative tasks as needed.
- Follows safety protocols regarding medication labeling, specimen handling, and infection control, and participates in emergency call rotations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
A high school diploma or GED and current basic life support certification are required. Certification as a surgical technologist and one to two years of experience in a surgical technologist role, or three to four years of experience in a similar capacity, is necessary. Registration with the State Regulatory Agency may be required where applicable. This position requires manual dexterity and the ability to maintain professionalism in high-stress situations.
Candidates must be organized, conscientious, and responsive to the needs of both the surgeon and the patient, while staying informed about advancements in the field.

Additional related education and/or experience is preferred.
