Dynamic History Educator for Urban Middle School
1 week ago
At Uncommon Schools, we strive to provide an outstanding education in historically under-resourced communities. Our network of high-performing public charter schools is built on a strong foundation of academic, co-curricular, and social-emotional learning that prepares students for success in college and beyond.
Camden Prep, one of our schools, serves students in grades K through 10 (growing to grade 12) and emphasizes strong authentic relationships between teachers and students, supported by effective school systems and an engaging instructional model. Our middle school history teachers work in grade level teams and departments to push students towards being self-guided learners.
The role of a history educator at Uncommon Schools is multifaceted, requiring the ability to develop subject mastery and have a keen sense of the socio-emotional changes middle school students experience. Teachers aim to empower students' voices and develop them into global citizens by emphasizing textual analysis, analytical writing, and discourse. They use engaging instructional strategies to make history come alive and prepare students for the academic autonomy and college preparatory focus of our high schools.
This position requires strong communication skills to facilitate student-led discourse of historical topics and guide students to understand the author's claim and the power of sourcing while developing skills of argumentation, corroboration, inquiry, and historiography through primary and secondary source analysis. Teachers are also expected to build an inclusive and safe environment where students feel empowered to use their voices to express evidence-based opinions and perspectives.
To be successful in this role, you must possess a demonstrated commitment to supporting students' social emotional and academic development. You should have an enthusiasm for collaborating with internal and external partners in the best interest of students and be a self-directed learner who solicits and implements feedback to improve outcomes and achieve objectives. Academic expertise in Education, History, Geography, Political Science, Criminal Justice, Social Sciences, or the Humanities is required, along with prior experience impacting K-12 students in urban schools and communities.
We offer competitive compensation and comprehensive benefits that support the personal health, wellness, and finances of our staff and their families. The estimated salary for this role is $67,500, depending on relevant professional experience, education, certifications, and tenure with Uncommon Schools. Benefits include generous paid time off, extensive training and development, choice of comprehensive health insurance plans, pre-tax flexible spending and health saving accounts, and more.
