Position Overview:
The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Manager will spearhead the establishment and enforcement of EHS protocols and practices. This role is crucial in providing expert guidance on EHS matters while collaborating with departmental leaders to ensure adherence to compliance, project oversight, reporting obligations, and other related EHS management challenges.
As a key member of the site leadership team, the EHS Manager will engage in strategic planning, governance of EHS standards, auditing processes, management systems, sharing of best practices, compliance initiatives, and regulatory reporting.
The primary objective of this role is to cultivate a robust safety culture aimed at achieving exemplary EHS performance across all sites.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Foster a zero-injury safety culture: Lead and mentor teams at each site to maintain a hazard-free workplace, encourage safe work practices, and promote a lean safety culture that prioritizes employee safety as a core business value.
2. Implement lockout/tagout procedures in accordance with industry standards.
3. Ensure compliance reporting for all environmental, health, and safety activities in line with federal, state, and local EHS regulations.
4. Maintain EHS records and documentation effectively.
5. Provide daily support and direction on EHS programs for managers, supervisors, and employees to ensure a unified and effective approach.
6. Develop and communicate strategies to meet EHS objectives.
7. Create and execute plans to rectify or prevent losses and audit these plans for effectiveness.
8. Conduct proactive EHS audits and implement recommendations.
9. Identify potential environmental risks and formulate mitigation strategies to minimize incidents.
10. Ensure prompt investigation of environmental, health, and safety incidents, perform root cause analyses, and implement corrective action plans.
11. Collaborate with HR to manage employee workers' compensation claims and work assignments.
12. Oversee pollution and waste management programs.
13. Evaluate the safety of new processes and equipment.
14. Conduct or oversee air quality and noise level testing to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations.
15. Develop and implement training programs to fulfill regulatory requirements and operational needs.
16. Assess EHS performance and work with relevant personnel to devise recovery and improvement plans.
17. Establish goals, objectives, metrics, and scorecards to ensure the effectiveness of the EHS function.
18. Coordinate the identification of capital funding needs for EHS projects, ensuring that expenditures align with budgetary and timing constraints while achieving desired outcomes.
19. Develop, assess, and schedule regular emergency drills, including fire evacuations, tornado preparedness, and active shooter scenarios.
20. Train operators of forklifts and cranes to meet licensing qualifications.
21. Assist the Cleaning & Plating department with chemical inventory, storage, procurement, and related tasks.
22. Manage all maintenance operations, including the Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) program, ensuring the TPM spreadsheet is updated.
23. Collaborate with plant leadership to schedule maintenance personnel for machine repairs based on business priorities.
Qualifications:
To excel in this role, candidates should possess the following qualifications:
- A Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health & Safety Management, Environmental Management, or a related field is preferred; a minimum of 10 years of progressive EHS experience in a manufacturing setting is required.
- Experience in metals manufacturing is advantageous.
- A high degree of personal integrity is essential.
- Experience managing multiple sites is preferred.
- A dynamic leader with a proven track record of driving change initiatives; strong interpersonal skills to effectively engage with individuals across various disciplines and levels within the organization; ability to think strategically and critically analyze diverse information sources; capable of taking the initiative to achieve results; adept at applying situational leadership techniques as needed; skilled in evaluating personnel strengths and areas for improvement, with a focus on mentoring and coaching.
- Comprehensive knowledge of EHS regulations and requirements in Ohio.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with strong interpersonal abilities. A team-oriented individual with a proactive approach and the capacity to influence staff across the organization.
- Action-oriented decision-maker.
- Experience in supervising, leading, and developing EHS professionals.
- Familiarity with process improvement methodologies such as Kaizen is a significant plus.
- Strong emphasis on behavioral safety and employee engagement.
- Capability to reconstruct the EHS Department from the ground up.
