Role Responsibilities
We are looking for a highly driven and innovative Research Scientist to join the Discovery Sciences and Technologies (DST) Department. This role will enhance our cell biology capabilities to facilitate the identification and nomination of small molecule and biologics drug candidates across all therapeutic areas at Gilead.
Members of the DST Department are accountable for designing and executing rigorous, quantitative, and physiologically relevant in vitro biochemical and functional cellular assays. They collaborate within multidisciplinary teams to discover and refine drug candidates from initial lead identification to the characterization of the final development candidate.
The successful candidate will be a vital member of the DST research team, working closely with various research functions, including medicinal chemistry, structural biology, and protein therapeutics, to advance transformative therapies into clinical development for patients. Gilead operates as a highly matrixed organization, and the ability to work effectively across diverse functional groups and therapeutic areas is essential for this role.
- Extensive expertise in protein therapeutics and developing robust cellular assays to optimize and advance biologics from binder discovery to development candidate nomination.
- Lead from the laboratory to progress novel therapeutics pipeline, collaborating with internal cross-functional teams and external partners.
- Utilize diverse cell biology methods (e.g., Crispr) and approaches to elucidate pathway biology and cellular signaling pathways.
- Conduct critical experiments to enable hit identification and lead optimization across various modalities.
- Provide scientific insights and comprehensive data interpretation to inform decision-making at both project team and leadership levels.
- Assess and implement new technologies to support the advancement of internal programs and core group functions.
- Mentor associates, providing scientific direction and guidance.
- Contribute to multiple projects simultaneously, effectively collaborating in a cross-functional team environment and communicating clearly, both verbally and in writing, to diverse audiences.
Minimum Qualifications:
- BA/BS with 10 years of experience, MA/MS with 8 years of experience, or PhD with 2 years of experience.
- 7-10 years of experience in cellular biology, immunology, or a related scientific discipline preferred.
- Strong technical background in cellular assay development and familiarity with various assay readouts and technologies.
- Exceptional skills in immune cell characterization and functional assessment, including multi-color flow immunophenotyping and cytokine measurements.
- The candidate should demonstrate critical and creative thinking across multiple disciplines, with a proven ability to address complex scientific questions.
- A track record of productivity in diverse work environments.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a passion for working in an environment characterized by rigorous scientific and innovative thinking.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, detail-oriented organizational skills, and a collaborative team spirit.

The salary range for this position is: $165,000 - $214,000. Gilead considers various factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. Actual compensation may vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a comprehensive benefits package, including company-sponsored medical, dental, vision, and life insurance plans.
