The Clinical Laboratory Specialist is responsible for executing pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic phases of laboratory testing procedures, encompassing a range of complexities from waived to high-level testing.

This role involves recognizing the appropriate selection of laboratory tests and correlating results with patients' clinical conditions. The specialist must possess a solid scientific foundation to assess quality control, instrument functionality, and result accuracy.

Key Responsibilities:

The specialist will document all laboratory activities, monitor supply levels, and ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards related to safety and laboratory operations. Responsibilities also include providing customer service both in-person and via telephone, performing computer data entry and retrieval, and maintaining a clean and organized workplace.

Additional duties may involve overseeing quality assurance activities, evaluating methods, teaching, implementing point-of-care testing, and researching new methodologies.

Core Functions:

Testing and Processing:

Conducts waived, moderate, and high complexity testing in accordance with established laboratory protocols, covering all phases of testing.

Engages in quality control and assurance activities, including maintenance and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment. Responsible for specimen processing.

Data Management:
Accession specimens, enter results, and retrieve pertinent information efficiently.

Technical Support:
Addresses technical inquiries and resolves issues, serving as a primary resource for laboratory customers. Assists in reviewing and updating laboratory procedure documentation.

Additional Duties:
Participates in or leads performance improvement initiatives. Oversees evaluations, validations, and implementations of testing methods. May supervise laboratory assistants and non-registered technicians to ensure proper specimen preparation and testing procedures. Provides oversight and instruction to students and new employees.

Minimum Qualifications:
Experience


A minimum of one (1) year of recent clinical laboratory experience as a Clinical Laboratory Specialist or a recent graduate from an accredited Clinical Laboratory Scientist program.

Education

A Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.

Licensure and Certification

Clinical Lab Scientist Certificate, Medical Lab Scientist Certificate, or Medical Technologist Certificate to be obtained within six months of hire. Basic Life Support certification required within three months of hire.

Additional Requirements:
Experience that meets national certification exam prerequisites at the Clinical Laboratory Specialist level or qualifications as per CLIA standards.

Proficient computer skills.

Strong verbal and written communication abilities.

Excellent customer service and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
Two (2) years of generalist experience as a Clinical Laboratory Specialist or Medical Technologist.

Successful completion of an accredited Clinical Laboratory Scientist program.

Certification as a Clinical Laboratory Specialist or Medical Technologist by the time of hire or transfer.
