Job Description

Job Title: Operations Supervisor

Job Summary:

Old Dominion Freight Line is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Operations Supervisor to oversee the safe and efficient operation of our service center. As an Operations Supervisor, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of our service center, while maintaining and achieving department/shift and service center and/or company standards for safety, quality, efficiency, cost, service and delivery, training and development, and housekeeping.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Monitor and Evaluate Safety: Monitor and evaluate the safety of each employee daily, train on safety processes as needed, and ensure compliance with local, state, and federal safety regulations, as well as OSHA and DOT compliance.
  • Plan and Execute Operations: Monitor and evaluate the safe and efficient planning, loading, and unloading process of freight throughout the shift, and ensure that 100% of trailers are loaded correctly to ensure safe transport of freight.
  • Supervise and Train Employees: Supervise and train employees on safe lifting techniques, and ensure that employees are using safe lifting practices throughout the day.
  • Manage Housekeeping: Monitor and maintain housekeeping within the shift to ensure safety and productivity.
  • Manage Pickups and Deliveries: Manage, assign, and supervise pickups and deliveries to employees in the area to ensure proper utilization and development of employees, equipment, loading, and unloading while meeting OD and customer expectations.
  • Collaborate with Management: Closely work with Service Center management to ensure alignment in meeting daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly business objectives.
  • Provide Feedback and Coaching: Provide positive and constructive feedback to employees on a continual basis regarding ROI, MPH, stops per hour, return shipments, missed shipments, delivery/pickup errors, overall productivity, etc.
  • Conduct Inspections: Conduct daily inspections to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal safety regulations, as well as OSHA and DOT compliance.
  • Operate Computer Systems: Operate AS400 system, BLU system, DYMS, and any other computer/internal freight monitoring systems used within the company to monitor freight movement.
  • Use Forklift: Complete forklift job training knowledge and use a forklift as necessary within the service center.
  • Conduct Daily Shift Meetings: Conduct daily shift meetings to discuss important information and ensure that employees are aware of their responsibilities and expectations.
  • Make Informed Decisions: Make quick and informed decisions based on volume levels and communicate schedule to affected employees.
  • Inspect Tools and Equipment: Inspect working conditions of tools and equipment needed for safe operation within the area and direct the correction of any improper or adverse condition that exists.
  • Comprehend and Ensure Compliance: Comprehend and ensure compliance with company and government regulations.
  • Work Flexible Schedule: Work assigned shift/s as needed, and be available to work depending upon customer pick-up and delivery schedules.
  • Use Proprietary Technology: Use OD's proprietary technology system permitting consistent monitoring of shipment locations as freight moves through the various terminals while communicating continuously throughout the day with associates, customers, and team members verbally and through other computer operating systems.
  • Complete Forms: Complete the various company and government forms utilized in freight movement, such as shipping orders, city stripping manifests, freight bills, inter-terminal movement forms (ITMs), and exception forms.
  • Supervise Staff: Responsible for staff within the department, including hiring and disciplinary action.
Qualifications:
  • Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience: 2 years of experience with operations, preferably in the transportation industry.
  • Supervisory Experience: Supervisory experience preferred.
  • Technical Skills: Working knowledge of AS400 and Microsoft Office.
  • Communication Skills: Good verbal and written communication skills, strong interpersonal skills.
  • Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor's degree preferred.
Working Conditions:

Working Days: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday.

Working Shift: AM.
