Job Description

We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Associate Curator to join our team at the Museum of African American History. The successful candidate will possess excellent knowledge of African American history, museum and archival collections management, and curation.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Assisting with planning and facilitating public programs, exhibitions, and scholarship initiatives;
  • Developing new programs focused on African American history and culture;
  • Contributing to outreach partnerships and collaborations with community-based institutions;
  • Working with the Director to develop a strategic collecting vision for the Museum of African American History;
  • Cataloging, describing, and preserving collections;
  • Disseminating information about incoming collections via publications, social media, and public programs;
  • Representing the Historical Society at conferences and meetings;
  • Contributing to research and development of new exhibits and updates to existing ones.

 

Required Skills and Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A minimum of a B.A. in African American History, History, Museum Studies, or American Studies (M.A. preferred);
  • Excellent writing and research abilities;
  • Familiarity with digital platforms and software;
  • Public speaking experience;
  • Knowledge of museum and/or archival standards and practice;
  • A demonstrated historical knowledge of the African American experience, particularly in Western Pennsylvania.
