Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Medical Laboratory Specialist to join our team at WVU Medicine. As a Medical Laboratory Specialist, you will play a critical role in ensuring the accuracy and reliability of laboratory test results.

Key Responsibilities
  • Process and analyze samples in a timely and efficient manner, adhering to standard operating procedures and quality control measures.
  • Set up, run, and maintain laboratory instruments, ensuring they are functioning properly and accurately.
  • Perform phlebotomy procedures as needed, adhering to infection control protocols and patient safety guidelines.
  • Complete forms and reports findings to nurses and/or physicians, providing accurate and timely information.
  • Interact with healthcare workers to solve problems and interpret patient lab results, demonstrating strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Perform routine and basic laboratory testing within a designated area, recognizing testing inconsistencies and taking corrective action.
  • Maintain accurate and legible records of patient and specimen information, adhering to hospital and departmental policies.
  • Ensure compliance with hospital, state, and federal guidelines for safety, security, and infection control.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, visitors, and healthcare staff, demonstrating professionalism and concern for individual needs.
Requirements
  • Associates degree in Medical Laboratory or Laboratory Sciences (MLT) or equivalent experience.
  • Current licensure as a Medical Technician within 90 days of hire, or applicable state licensure.
  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT) is preferred.
  • Experience as a Medical Laboratory Technician, with a strong understanding of laboratory procedures and protocols.
Working Environment

The Medical Laboratory Specialist will work in a fast-paced laboratory environment, surrounded by strong or unpleasant odors and potentially hazardous materials. The ability to multitask and handle stressful situations is essential, as is effective communication and teamwork skills.

  • Able to work well as a team with co-workers, supervisors, and all other staff/customers, including patients.
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills.
