Position Overview

Join the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) in our Office of Environmental Equity (OEE) to contribute significantly to the safeguarding of public health and the environment. Our mission is to embed the values and practices of Environmental Justice and Tribal Affairs throughout our operations, addressing historical inequities and current challenges in decision-making processes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee and guide a team of diverse professionals to incorporate Tribal sovereignty principles into DTSC's initiatives, while assessing public and environmental health risks faced by Tribal nations.
  • Collaborate with project teams to ensure effective Native American engagement, consultation, and assessment of community vulnerabilities related to environmental health risks, adhering to relevant state and federal regulations.
  • Process requests for Sacred Lands Files and Tribal Contact Lists through the Native American Heritage Commission (NAHC).
  • Represent the Department in discussions with federal, state, and local agencies, consultants, Tribal communities, and advocacy groups on matters concerning environmental justice and Tribal relations.
  • Engage with communities through outreach activities, including public forums, surveys, and direct communication to gather input and foster collaboration.

Qualifications We Seek:

  • In-depth knowledge of federal, state, and local environmental legislation, including the National Environmental Policy Act and the California Environmental Quality Act.
  • Proven experience in collaborating with environmental regulatory bodies on project approvals.
  • Experience in fostering government-to-government relationships with California Tribal governments, along with a solid understanding of California's historical context and archaeological practices.
  • Demonstrated project management capabilities.
  • Expertise in cleanup and regulatory permitting processes.
  • Strong presentation skills in public settings.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across various agencies.
  • Experience in drafting professional reports.
  • Background in developing training programs focused on environmental justice and Tribal issues.
  • Interest or experience in engaging with Environmental Justice communities, emphasizing community development and participation.
  • Experience in conducting governmental consultations with Tribal entities and performing field inspections.
