Job Summary

The Child Life Specialist is responsible for providing therapeutic play opportunities and assisting children with coping skills before, during and after medical procedures. This role requires a deep understanding of child development and the ability to create a supportive environment for children and families.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assess children and families at various stress points throughout their healthcare experience, identifying relevant data to develop a comprehensive assessment and initiate a plan of care.
  • Facilitate play and familiar life experiences to encourage expression, process information and promote development, evaluating and documenting assessments, goals, interventions, outcomes and significant events.
  • Utilize evidence-based best practices to facilitate preparation for challenging situations with children and families, minimizing fear and anxiety and promoting mastery of their experience.
  • Provide educational opportunities and resources that are responsive to the needs of children and families, promoting learning and mastery.
  • Educate staff, students, volunteers and the community on the unique needs of children and families, fostering appropriate and positive interactions throughout the healthcare experience.
  • Collaborate with the healthcare team to enhance communication, foster Patient and Family-Centered Care and maximize positive outcomes.
Qualifications
  • Required Bachelor's Degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Child Development or related field.
  • Successful completion of Child Life Internship under the direct supervision of a Certified Child Life Specialist.
  • CRT-Child Life Specialist (CCLS) certification required.
