Job Summary

Key Responsibilities
  • Plan, develop, and conduct professional educational opportunities for employees in a quality-conscious and cost-effective manner.
  • Establish a work environment that promotes learning by individual growth/development, professional practice, and a collaborative team approach to assure excellence in delivery of quality, technical skills, and high-level staff satisfaction.
  • Conduct unit-based consultation for clinical quality excellence.
  • Plan, promote, and deliver professional education programs for Surgical Technologists and students.
  • Coordinate orientation of new employees and develop individualized learning plans for each orientee.
  • Use performance development resources to assist in development of an individualized competency-based orientation for newly hired or transitioning personnel.
  • Conduct unit-based consulting for clinical quality excellence and regularly monitor patient population-related quality metrics.
  • Promote quality of care and safe patient care through routine consulting with clinical staff and raise staff awareness utilizing at-the-elbow educational opportunities.
  • Facilitate on-going staff development and develop and conduct a periodic needs assessment to determine educational needs of CST staff.
  • Develop and ensure implementation of in-services/training in response to needs identified by unit leadership.
  • Identify educational needs across a continuum of patient care and ensure implementation of programs and materials using evidence-based practice to ensure staff maintains a high level of clinical expertise.
  • Provide mentoring and development opportunities for Preceptors, Charge Nurses, and other interested staff.
  • Provide training opportunities and resources for staff for whom the nurse leader has identified as having performance concerns.
  • Maintain and update educational and competency materials to reflect current practices.
  • Develop and ensure implementation of new procedure, product, and new equipment training.
  • Maintain records of competency and educational activities to meet regulatory agency and legal requirements while promoting individual accountability for learning.
  • Maintain competency as a trained Clinical Simulation Facilitator and utilize simulation as a training method when appropriate.
  • Participate in shared governance model and promote awareness of external opportunities for learning and networking.
  • Consult and collaborate with individuals/community agencies in providing effective continuing education opportunities for the CST staff and provide leadership by actively participating in these programs.
  • Evaluate educational program viability and make recommendations as to the value of continuing, changing, or discontinuing on-going programs.
  • Actively promote staff development by providing a schedule and information for local/national educational opportunities, certification, etc.
  • Assist in the establishment of standards or criteria based on the mission, values, and philosophy of Park Nicollet Health Services.
  • Participate in departmental policy and procedure development, implementation, and interpretation for members of the healthcare team.
  • Utilize the concepts and tools of continuous improvement to ensure excellence in patient care endeavors.
Requirements
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience either in the operating room in the scrub role or as an instructor in a surgical technology program or a combination of both.
  • Must be certified through one of the following Surgical Technologist Programs: CST or NCCT at time of hire or obtain the certification within 12 months of hire.
  • Highly organized individual with leadership and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects at one time.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of infection prevention principles necessary to provide the appropriate experience to our external clients.
  • Competently performs job-specific technical skills and possesses identified in the job-specific competency-based orientation material.
  • Records maintenance skills of staff.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to create, compose, and edit written materials.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community of roles.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in education preferred.
