General Overview

This role entails executing proficient mechanical tasks in the upkeep and restoration of municipal fleet vehicles and machinery.

Union Affiliation: American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME)
Pay Grade 16: $32.98 Hourly

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct repairs, overhauls, and diagnostics on a variety of City-owned vehicles, including electric models, as well as equipment such as trucks, cars, police vehicles, firefighting apparatus, snow removal machinery, utility vehicles, heavy machinery, and landscaping tools.
  • Diagnose and rectify issues with engines, transmissions, exhaust systems, brake systems, cooling systems, suspension systems, fuel and ignition systems, electronic control systems, and hydraulic systems.
  • Operate vehicles and machinery to assess their operational status.
  • Perform urgent repairs on vehicles or equipment at breakdown sites in the field.
  • Design and fabricate tools or components from metal necessary for vehicle and equipment repairs.
  • Inspect vehicles and equipment to ensure compliance with departmental standards and regulations; rectify any discrepancies.
  • Carry out tire and wheel services, including mounting and balancing, utilizing specialized tools.
  • Execute basic and preventive maintenance tasks on vehicles and equipment; change oil, lubricate, wash, and rotate tires with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Maintain a clean and safe working environment through shop cleanup activities.
  • May assist in snow removal operations as necessary.
  • May order and manage the inventory of required parts when serving as the sole mechanic in the department.
  • Document and update work orders and service records as needed, including part numbers, job duration, maintenance codes, vehicle hours and mileage, and completed repairs.
Additional Responsibilities:
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • All tools and equipment will be provided by the City of Burlington.
Qualifications/Basic Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of an accredited vocational training program in automotive repair and two (2) years of experience in servicing, maintaining, and repairing automotive, heavy-duty trucks, or heavy equipment, or four (4) years of relevant experience in lieu of formal education.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Class B CDL license within 90 days of hire.
  • Proficient knowledge and skills in standard methods, tools, practices, and equipment of the motor mechanic trade.
  • Vermont State Inspection license required within 90 days of hire.
  • Ability to obtain ASE certifications as necessary.
  • Ability to acquire Emergency Vehicle Technician certifications as required.
  • Ability to obtain Fork Lift Operator certification within 6 months of employment.
  • Knowledge of the operation, construction, and repair of internal combustion engines.
  • Ability to read and comprehend shop and operations manuals, schematic diagrams, and specifications.
  • Skill in using tools commonly utilized in automotive repair, welding, and torch work.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with departmental staff and vehicle/equipment users.
  • Must learn and adhere to VOSHA safety regulations.
  • Ability to foster an environment that embraces the six operating principles: Customer Service, Fiscal Responsibility, Good Labor Relations, Employee Empowerment, Cooperation, and Continuous Improvement.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Must be available to work nights, weekends, and holidays as required.

  • Must be a flexible team player who takes direction well, is safety-conscious, customer-oriented, and willing to learn to operate all equipment and perform all assigned tasks.
  • Regular attendance is essential to meet job expectations.
