Job Summary: We are seeking a highly skilled School Counselor to join our team at Charlotte County Public Schools. As a School Counselor, you will play a critical role in promoting mental health and education for staff and students.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Engage in mental health promotion and education for staff and students
  • Assist with the provision of resiliency education, civic and character education, and life skill education in the classroom and school setting
  • Utilize state, local school board, and governing board policies and procedures to make appropriate community-based referrals
  • Conduct risk and threat assessments in collaboration with other school-based mental health staff for students in crisis
  • Conduct assessments for involuntary examination if licensed through the Department of Health (DOH) under chapter 491
  • Participate as a collaborative member of the school-based threat management team
  • Provide school-based crisis intervention in collaboration with other school-based mental health professionals
  • Gather and synthesize data from a variety of sources to inform the School Counseling Program
  • Use data and technology to support student learning and development
  • Apply evidence-based strategies that promote academic, career readiness, and resiliency student competencies
  • Model and support respectful collaboration practices between school leaders, parents or guardians, students, district and school personnel and community partners
  • Maintain high visibility and accessibility, and actively listen to and respond to parents or guardians, students, district and school personnel and community partners
  • Participate as a collaborative member of the school-based Multi-tiered System of Support (MTSS) team
  • Support students who are identified as at-risk based on Early Warning Sign (EWS) indicators, to include academic, attendance, and social/emotional/behavioral concerns
  • Register, schedule, and orient new students to school procedures and to the school's varied opportunities for learning
  • Coordinate registration, orientation, and transition from middle school
  • Identify students for promotion, retention, summer school, and administrative placement in accordance with Charlotte County Student Progression Plan
  • Assist with the district and state testing programs
  • Share strategies that support student achievement with parents, teachers, other educators, and community organizations, advocating for the academic, career, and social/emotional development of students, as well as receiving information on student needs and identifying strategies to assist students
  • Collaborate with other educators, parents, and the community through teaming and partnering, and participation on school and district committees
  • Participate in workshops and training sessions
  • Maintain an on-going dialogue with secondary school administrators, other school counselors, teachers, and support services personnel regarding programs and services
  • Act as a facilitator of the parent-child relationship by providing advising/counseling services and by conducting conferences for the purpose of interpreting tests and academic data
  • Work with the career specialist to obtain, maintain, and disseminate information related to occupations, financial aid and scholarships, post-secondary education, and military and job opportunities to students, classes
  • Provide academic advisement and scheduling on an individual student basis
  • Hold self and others accountable to the Principles of Professional Conduct for the Education Profession in Florida, pursuant to Rule 6A-10.081, Florida Administrative Code
  • Document school counselor interventions and complete required forms and maintain records and reports to meet all local and state guidelines
  • Adhere to the state and federal legal rights of students and parents or guardians with regard to student records per Rule 6A-1

Requirements:

  • Masters degree or higher degree from an accredited four-year college/university
  • Meets Florida Department of Education certification requirements for Guidance and Counseling, grades Pre-K through 12
  • Eligibility for License in Mental Health Counseling (LMHC)
