Position Overview

CHOP is seeking a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to become a vital member of the inpatient oncology Advanced Practice Provider (APP) team. This team operates within a specialized 51-bed unit on our Philadelphia campus.

Working closely with an attending physician, the Front Line Ordering Clinician (FLOC) Nurse Practitioner and Physician Assistant will be responsible for delivering direct care and follow-up for a patient population that aligns with their qualifications and expertise. This care is provided in designated inpatient and hospital-outpatient settings. The role encompasses clinical practice, consultation, professional growth, education, and research. NPs and PAs in these positions may be required to possess acute/critical care education and certification, which will be determined based on the specific responsibilities within the practice area. The clinical aspect of this role demands a heightened level of accountability, including the management of a cohort of high-acuity patients. Additionally, the FLOC NP/PA may need to perform invasive procedures to ensure physiological stability. The position will also entail off-shift responsibilities, with the rotation schedule including days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays as dictated by clinical needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluate complex acute, critical, and chronically ill patients for urgent and emergent conditions, utilizing relevant data to assess for physiological instability and formulate a comprehensive care plan.
  • Implement therapeutic interventions to stabilize acute and critical health issues, as outlined in the Scope of Practice Document and approved during the credentialing process.
  • Assess the indications, contraindications, risks, and benefits of therapeutic interventions.
  • Oversee the care plan through ongoing evaluation, modification, and documentation based on the patient's response to treatment, focusing on optimizing patient outcomes.
  • Integrate health promotion, protection, and injury prevention strategies into the care plan within the context of complex acute, critical, and chronic illnesses.
  • Facilitate patient transitions between and within healthcare settings.
  • Serve as an educational resource for patients/families, nursing staff, and the healthcare team, acting as a consultant to multidisciplinary team members.
  • Engage in scholarly activities, including research and education, while pursuing personal professional development and contributing to the growth of others by mentoring and precepting.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to patient safety by proactively addressing safety concerns and enhancing practices to improve safety outcomes.
Education Requirements
  • Master's Degree in Nursing Required
  • Doctorate in Nursing Preferred
Skills and Competencies
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in an inter-professional team environment.
  • Proficient in using computers and electronic medical records.

  • Computer Literacy: Basic skills in using computers (mouse, keyboard, printer, USB ports) and Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to navigate clinical communication systems and patient-facing technology.
  • Information Literacy: Ability to determine the clinical information needed and access it efficiently.
  • Information Management Literacy: Proficient in navigating electronic health record systems and using clinical decision support tools.

  • Specialty Certification in relevant subspecialty - Required upon hire.
