Job Summary

The Arkansas Agriculture Department is seeking a highly skilled Veterinary Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our department, you will be responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, and reporting animal disease and death. This is a critical role that requires strong analytical and communication skills, as well as the ability to work effectively in a laboratory setting.

Key Responsibilities
  • Generate, analyze, and interpret test results to facilitate the diagnosis of animal disease caused by infectious agents and/or chemical imbalances.
  • Develop and implement laboratory-wide policies governing chemical stability and safety.
  • Disseminate toxic substance information to veterinarians, federal and state agencies, and the general public via reports, lectures, and published materials.
  • Conduct drug testing on animals competing for awards at the annual Arkansas State Fair.
  • Coordinate work involving multiple laboratory sections and attend lectures, management meetings, conferences, and continuing education courses.
Requirements
  • Doctorate degree in veterinary medicine (DVM) or a related field.
  • At least one year of experience in a chemical laboratory, including one year in a leadership capacity.
  • Strong leadership background with a history of collaborative work with various livestock and poultry services.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Leadership experience in a laboratory setting performing personnel evaluations, procurement, scheduling, and other related duties.
  • Broad knowledge of veterinary clinical pathology, microbiology, immunology, and toxicology.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret scientific and technical journals.
  • Ability to coordinate with multiple state and federal agencies in monitoring the Livestock Market Compliance, Animal Disease Traceability, Outreach, and Emergency Response and Preparedness.
