Job Description and Duties

Patton State Hospital, Human Resources is seeking a qualified Staff Psychiatrist to join our team. As a Staff Psychiatrist, you will be responsible for examining and diagnosing psychiatric forensic patients, determining the type of psychiatric and general medical treatment needed, and administering psychiatric treatment as necessary.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Examine and diagnose psychiatric forensic patients
  • Determine the type of psychiatric and general medical treatment needed
  • Administer psychiatric treatment as necessary
  • Perform general medical and surgical work
  • Make ward rounds and review progress of forensic patients
  • Prescribe changes in treatment when indicated
  • Consult with supervisory psychiatrist on unusual, complex, or serious cases
  • Instruct and supervise interns, residents, other physicians, nurses, technicians, and personnel assigned for special training
  • Participate in staff conferences and clinics
  • Keep and supervise the keeping of medical records
  • Provide relatives with information concerning patients in person or by correspondence
  • Perform research in psychiatry
  • Serve periodically as officer-of-the-day
  • Observe and intervene in instances of disruptive or assaultive behavior

Requirements:

  • Possession of the legal requirements for the practice of medicine in California as determined by the California Board of Medical Quality Assurance or the California Board of Osteopathic Examiners
  • One year of experience in the practice of psychiatry or completion of one year of an approved residency in psychiatry

Working Conditions:

Patton is a forensic psychiatric hospital and was established in 1890 and opened in 1893. DSH-Patton provides treatment to forensically and civilly committed patients within a secure treatment area. The hospital does not accept voluntary admissions.

Special Requirements:

  • The position requires a Drug Screening to be passed prior to being hired
  • The position requires a Background Investigation to be cleared prior to being hired
  • The position requires Medical Clearance prior to being hired
  • The position requires a California Medicine Practice License
