Key Responsibilities- Register patients efficiently and accurately, ensuring all necessary information is collected and documented.
- Compile and type medical information for patient records and statistical reports, maintaining accurate and up-to-date patient account receivables.
- Interview patients, relatives, or others responsible to determine payment arrangements and refer unusual cases to the immediate supervisor.
- Assist self-pay patients in making suitable arrangements for balances due beyond initial deposits or third-party payments.
- Answer inquiries to patient accounts and advise patients on insurance benefits.
- Receive all payments and deposits, issue receipts for all monies received, and make proper accounting for all funds received.
- Post charges daily to proper patient accounts and post payments to accounts daily.
- Bill patients routinely within established policies and procedures.
- Determine billing methods for third-party payors.
- Maintain required registers for Medicare, Medicaid, and others as required.
- Contact insurance carriers/agencies to obtain precertification of ancillary, admission, and surgical procedures.
- Transport patients in wheelchairs as needed.
- Operate various office equipment, including copiers, fax machines, and other equipment as assigned.
- Maintain income register and report of adjustments to accounts receivable.
- Operate communication systems, placing and answering telephone calls, paging or contacting staff, and maintaining appropriate records.
- Keep a record of all incoming toll-charge calls.
- Provide general receptionist services for the clinic, supplying non-technical information regarding the clinic or referring questions to the proper person.
- Give general information concerning a patient's condition or status under guidelines furnished by nursing or other appropriate personnel.
- Make and maintain appointment schedules for Clinic Physicians.
- Secure required signatures on reports and records relative to release of information, according to policies of the clinic.
- Assist physicians and nursing personnel as required.
- Contact patients, physicians, or others for information necessary to properly complete insurance or other type billings.
- Type memos, correspondence, billing forms, etc., as needed.
- Maintain sufficient files according to established procedures for an efficient operation of the Business Office/Clinic, including patient charts.
- Compile periodic and statistical reports and other data as directed.
- Maintain log of patient charts issued and missing charts.
- Maintain work area in a clean and safe manner.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent (preferably with commercial courses, e.g., filing, office methods, business English).
- Must possess basic computer skills in Word and Excel.
- Knowledgeable of medical terminology, CPT coding, and ICD9 coding.
- Must type 60 words per minute accurately, operate various office machines, and possess general knowledge of clerical and business procedures.
- Must be well organized and function well under stressful conditions.
- Three (3) to six (6) months on-the-job training is required to attain proficiency of performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.
