This role as a Senior Power Electronics Engineer - Application Technical Lead involves the integration of variable speed drives into Trane Commercial Systems' HVAC products, along with providing technical guidance to the Power Electronics Applications Team.

This position supports a Hybrid work arrangement (3 days/week on-site) at our Engineering & Technology Center.


Core Responsibilities:

Oversee all application-related aspects of power electronic devices for Trane Commercial Products produced in North America, including new product development and lifecycle management.

Responsibilities include:

  • Device selection and sizing recommendations, defining application specifications, and component-level qualification.
  • System-level qualification of devices, tuning drive/motor pairings, and setting parameters.
  • Mentoring and onboarding team members in power electronics applications.
  • Developing standard operating procedures and best practices.
  • Acting as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) to resolve complex issues in the field and manufacturing environments.
  • Conducting independent reviews for project designs and technical assessments.
  • Qualifying Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) for use in Trane Commercial HVAC solutions.
  • Applying variable speed drives to HVAC systems, particularly for compressors and fans.
  • Integrating unit-level controls and safety features with the drive systems.
  • Optimizing VFD cooling for specific product requirements.
  • Analyzing motor-drive compatibility and tuning electrical systems for peak performance.
  • Writing specifications for electrical components within the motor-drive framework.
  • Conducting qualification tests for the motor-drive systems.
  • Providing ongoing lifecycle support for products, including troubleshooting in the field and manufacturing.
  • Willingness to travel overnight as needed, approximately 5-10% of the time.

Minimum Qualifications:
A Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering with a minimum of 7 years of experience in variable frequency drive applications is required. A Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering is advantageous.

Compensation:
The annual compensation range is between $78,000 and $143,000, reflecting national averages in the US. Actual compensation may vary based on experience, merit, and geographic location.
