Job Title: Agency Attorney Intern

The City of New York is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Agency Attorney Intern to join the Law Enforcement Bureau. As an Agency Attorney Intern, you will play a critical role in enforcing the New York City Human Rights Law and promoting equality of treatment throughout the City.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Interview members of the public alleging claims of discrimination and engage in pre-complaint interventions, investigations, and file complaints where appropriate.
  • Investigate claims of discrimination made by members of the public and pattern or practice violations for potential Commission-initiated action.
  • Negotiate resolutions of claims and draft settlement agreements. Monitor compliance with settlement agreements.
  • Litigate cases from a threshold of determination of probable cause through and including referral to the hearings division.
  • Represent the Commission before an Administrative Law Judge at conferences, and engage in discovery, including taking and defending depositions.
  • Collaborate with the Commission's Community Relations Bureau to provide trainings and to engage in coordinated approaches to rooting out systemic discrimination.
  • Represent the Commission at community events, speaking engagements, and at bar associations.
Requirements:
  • Graduation from an accredited United States law school as defined in the Rules of the New York Court of Appeals (Sections .3 or .5) or admission to the New York State Bar.
  • Strong relationships with organizations and groups serving diverse communities in the City and experience working with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Strong work ethic, with a commitment to promoting equality and fairness.
