Job Description

The City of New York's Law Department Administrative Hearings Division conducts administrative termination of tenancy proceedings on grounds such as non-desirability, breach of rules and regulations, and misrepresentation. Attorneys in this Division draft charges, negotiate settlements, and litigate termination of tenancy matters before an Impartial Hearing Officer.

Responsibilities include:

  • Quickly identifying key issues in a case and gaining a rapid resolution with supervision and latitude for independent judgment.
  • Preparing and litigating administrative hearings and grievances, including preparing charges, requesting investigations, negotiating settlements, and appearing at Hearings to represent the City.
  • Answering routine inquiries from managers, opposing counsel, and Borough management on assigned cases.
  • Conducting legal research on complex cases and preparing memoranda.
  • Maintaining computer records in the Case Management System and preparing memos and other documents regarding case dispositions.
  • Maintaining all case files, evidence, and computer files.
  • Representing the City in Applicant Appeal actions and Small Claims Court actions.
