Elementary Literacy Specialist

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Elementary Literacy Specialist to join our team at Suffolk Public Schools. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing instructional support to students in grades K-5 who are not meeting grade level reading proficiency.
Key Responsibilities- Develop and implement evidence-based literacy instruction and intervention strategies to support students in grades K-5.
- Collaborate with teachers and other school staff to expand student development of appropriate literacy skills and knowledge.
- Use formative and summative assessment data to inform instruction and planning for identified students.
- Coordinate and implement intervention services to students who demonstrate substantial deficiencies based on assessment and screener data.
- Develop and implement lesson plans and instructional materials that align with division expectations.
- Provide direct instruction in vocabulary, fluency, decoding skills, and reading comprehension strategies.
- Collaborate with the literacy team and school leadership team to analyze school-wide literacy data and conduct a school-wide literacy needs assessment.
- Conduct ongoing assessment of student learning using a variety of measures to determine appropriate placement and specific instruction needs.
- Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior and create a safe, orderly, and effective learning environment.
- Participate in parent conferences to report student progress.
- Continues to develop professionally by attending seminars, workshops, and professional meetings.
- Must hold or be eligible for a Virginia Teaching License with an endorsement in English.
- An endorsement as a Reading Specialist is preferred.
- Preferable successful prior K-5 classroom teaching experience in which the teaching of literacy and reading was a major or primary component of classroom instruction.
- Have the personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, parents, administrators, and teachers.
- Salary Range: $54,060 - $87,901 ($2,944 Additional for Master's Degree)
- Contract: 10 Months
